PNW - graphics anomaly, or 'just the way it is'?

Featured Replies

I took off from Darrington in my new A2A Piper J3, and was enjoying the ride, until i started seeing weird things, like a strip through the trees where it appeared it might should be a road, but instead it looked like someone had bulldozed the a path (there was no asphalt). Then I saw these two things:pnwrockpatch.jpgOther rocky patches I've seen have curved corners, so those right angles are jarring, and out of place. I'd heard it said on The Science Channel, that "all straight lines are man-made" :-) Then this perfectly square white patch:pnwwhitesquare.jpgOk, you see that white patch? that's the exact same texture that was used for the "road" strip that went a long way through the valley on my way.I was concerned I was having graphics issues, as I've had loads of problems over the last two weeks getting FSX setup and properly configured with 'the big four' mods. I later opened up Stark airport and flew all around, and everything was utterly perfect. No anomalies whatsoever. Are the things in the images above graphics issues, or is that just the way it is, and I shouldn't try to over analyze it. I'm kind of a perfectionist when it comes to graphics. Thanks.

Hi there, welcome to the land of the chainsaw :( What you're seeing are areas where all trees have been felled (cutblocks); in late winter they retain snow longer while the surrounding trees have shed most of the snow, hence the contrast. North Americans love their rectangular grid system, which is why many of these cutblocks have very straight edges. During summer the contrast is a bit less pronounced. We've placed these cutblocks based on current forest management databases so you should see the same area in Google Earth or Bing. It's not a perfect match because the source data aren't always specific (or accurate) as to the current status of regrowth of young trees within a given area. However, we do have six different cutblock classes in our ground texture sets so there is quite a bit of variety. For an interesting discussion about this see our forum: http://orbxsystems.com/forums/index.php?topic=19686.0Cheers, Holger

Wow, thanks Holger! I'm very relieved! I thought something was wrong with my system, lol. Many thanks for the explanation. I felt conflicted because I was seeing that near Darrington, and simply flawless landscape around Stark. Fantastic product, and more please!
