Very Low FPS with a Core I7 rig
This is true, especially when using any 3rd party add-ons to FSX, like GEX, REX, FTX, etc. The aforementioned Nick N guide is the quintessential FSX tuning/setup guide, just plan to set aside a day (week?) to get it done. Considering it takes powerhouse systems to make FSX run smooth & pretty, what the hell were people doing in 2006? It must have looked like arse.

New Video Card and Compatibility
ziffel replied to brucek's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcYou'd want your motherboard to have at least one x16 slot, for maximum bandwidth. I'm pretty sure those x38 boards do have that.As for comparing cards, you might try this tool:http://emsai.net/reviews/gpu/Example, i put a 9800GTX in the top slot, and a GTX 260 in the bottom. It shows a difference of around +27% in favor of the 260. I've found this chart to be generally in the ball park on getting an idea of the differences in video card power.

Anisotropic vs. Trilinear
ziffel replied to Sesquashtoo's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcThe reason NickN wants you to use Trilinear, is not because it's better, but because he wants you to have Anisotropic 16x set up in nhancer. Same with Anti-Aliasing. Nhancer, when properly set up, overrides the in-game settings for filtering and anti-aliasing. In order to make the override work, some applications need to have filtering and AA set to something specific. So, if you were to set FSX' in-game settings to Anisotropic, and have Anti-Aliasing checked, those settings would overrule nhancer, and you'd lose nhancer's far superior settings. So Nick has us set filtering to Trilinear, and AA to OFF, so that nhancer can have control of those settings.

Anisotropic vs. Trilinear
ziffel replied to Sesquashtoo's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcAnisotropic is the best filtering available. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anisotropic_filteringCheck out the picture in the top right to see a comparison against trilinear.

197.13 Fan Control
ziffel replied to dolph98's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcThanks. As it turned out, the error I was getting from RivaTuner was about it not being able to load an unsigned driver in Win7-64. It asked if I wanted to turn off driver signing, reboot, then enable it. I did, and of course it didn't work. Just kept saying the same thing over in a loop. After googling around, I found that RivaTuner appears to be, for the most part, a dead project and the dev is now producing updated RivaTuner re-packs in the form of MSI Afterburner, and EVGA Precision Tools, that I know of. I got Afterburner, and it worked great. I set it up to do a dynamic fan control based on GPU temp, and it's working.

197.13 Fan Control
ziffel replied to dolph98's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcDolph, how did you get Rivatuner working? When I tried it, it said "no supported driver" or some such.

197.13 Fan Control
ziffel replied to dolph98's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcWith 197.13, I installed the Nvidia "Performance Tools", which add the OC'ing and fan controls - and profiles - pages to Nvidia Control Panel.I can't get these things to work for love nor money. I can manually change the clocks and fan speed, but the "Save to Profile" button never lights up, it's always ghosted out and unusable. Every time it asks if I want it to load when Windows loads, I say yes, but it never does. Anyway, my texture flashing came back again, despite high fan speeds and reasonable GPU temps. It's something in the cfg file. When it was all working perfectly a few days ago, I backed up that fsx.cfg file. I guess I made some changes, or something changed, I don't know, today they were happening bad. It's where a geometric shape, usually water, will flash to plain white for a split second and then back again. It never happens in the sky or clouds, and rarely on land. I restored that known good CFG from a few days ago, and presto, it went away again. Some clues. It does not happen in windowed mode. It does not happen in any other 3D game/application. It does not happen in DX10 Preview mode. There are just sooooo many variables. drivers, heat, 3rd party textures, dx9 vs dx10, 1000 different cfg settings, nhancer and it's many settings. and so on.

197.13 Fan Control
ziffel replied to dolph98's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcI actually just came here to post about this exact topic.I have a GTX285, and also the 197.xx drivers. I've been having texture flashing problems. They'd seem to go from occasional, to horrible. I'd tried everything I could think of over the last 3 days, but nothing gave me relief. I'd have moments of 30 minutes where I thought i'd at least minimized the problem to where the sim was playable, but then it'd come back with a vengeance. Last night, I tried going to older drivers, it didn't help. In reverting back to 197, I also grabbed ntune and thought I'd try underclocking my card (it came factory oc'ed to 666/1512). That didn't help either. But then I noticed the fan speed was on 14% (!). I moved it up to 45%, and haven't had a *single* texture flash since (90 mins of flying, incl PNW and non-PNW areas). Now I don't know if it was from reinstalling the drivers, or from the fan bump, but my money's on the fan. I just hope it sticks. Every time I think I have this thing beat, it seems to come back and bite me in the arse.

Bliss
Ok, in retrospect, the above videos were pretty bad :) Well, the L39 vid is ok, if a bit mechanical.I've been getting pointers from Jigsaw, and he's helped me a lot. Here is my latest:Heart in San Francisco (2:53)For some reason, this one only upped to 480p, so it'd probably look better in the default youtube window size.I think you'll notice a slight improvement over the Mt St Helen's video :(

[HOW TO] Fixing dissapearing textures - The real FIX!
I tried everything he said, including disabling nhancer and giving FSX control of AA/AF, turned of vsync, etc. For me, this was a bust ... I lost 5 fps, and it looks much worse, due to FSX's poor AA/AF, and no vsync for me is just not doable. I get bad screen tearing and I just can't handle it. I went back to my nhancer setup, 8xS AA, 16x AF, vsync on, and reset all that stuff I added back to the way it was, and I'm back to getting 20fps sustained over a very dense downtown San Fran, and 30fps (using FPSlimiter) over non-city areas, and it looks stunning. I think I'll just leave well enough alone.

[HOW TO] Fixing dissapearing textures - The real FIX!
Ulfb,Did you leave TML at 1024? That's the one setting I don't understand about *******' settings ... he says make it "30" whereas the default is 3. I show default of 1024, and up to 4096, as you mentioned.

EZDok - simply the greatest add-on!
I do, and thanks! No wonder i couldn't find them.

EZDok - simply the greatest add-on!
Does anyone know how to disable the arrow keys in FSX, so I can use the Spot cam to move around? As it is, when using the arrow keys to control the spot cam, they (the arrow keys) control pitch trim and aileron movement at the same time. I can't find any listing for them in the FSX controls to disable them.

[HOW TO] Fixing dissapearing textures - The real FIX!
I put in this line as suggested, and just flew my first session ever (in DX9) without texture flashing. I was having textures disappear and flash white. I don't know if I just got lucky, but I've never flown 30 minutes before without at least some flashing, until now. So fingers crossed. Thanks for the heads up.

Same here. Got a chance to mess with it today, and I love the new spot camera.

Plane loves going left
I have problems with going left too, but mine is a bit different. In Cessna's, both my payware 152, and the stock 172, they constantly want to bank left. if I let go of the stick, they will bank (and thus turn) left. I had realism to the far right, which I now understand isn't actually realistic, but rather unrealistically difficult. I put those back in the middle, which helped, but I still have to babysit the stick. In my Beaver X, and especially the A2A Piper Cub, I can let the stick go and those will fly straight all day long, assuming no wind, so I know it's not a stick calibration issue.

Got my GTX 285, now lots and lots of FSX problems
ziffel replied to ziffel's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcUpdate:I found a tool called AutoHotkey (free, open-source) that will record macros, including mouse macros. So I created a macro with that to disable the 2nd monitor, and another to re-enable it. Now that process is a simple double-click. Things seem to be straightening out. A few small adjustments in nhancer, disable the 2nd monitor, then I flew in San Fran over dense city scenery for 30 minutes. I saw one texture flash, over the water, and that was it. Think I'm going to just go with this, as DX9 looks really, really good now.

EZDok - simply the greatest add-on!
This is the big patch. I grabbed it last night, but due to other problems I didn't have time to try it out yet. There's a video he's posted there that goes over how to set up the new hat pan ... which gives us the wonderful outside 6-degrees of freedom camera in spot view. It's an amazing camera. Look for this thread called "for movie makers"

Nick's NHancer settings!
I had to change one of his settings too. the LOD Bias (I think it was) set to "clamped". I got horrible texture flickering with that on. I still get occasional flickering, but it's greatly reduced when I disable that.Everyone's system is different, like our fingerprints. Even people with same hardware will experience differences. Intel will tell you that no two cpu's they make are perfectly alike. There are so many variations involved with FSX that Nick's guide can only be used as just that ... a guide, not a statement of objective facts. Not to mention we all use different add-ons as well. Making all this stuff work together is like trying to balance an egg on the head of a nail. And for what it's worth, BP=0 for me was a disaster. I got the most ungodly texture flashing you've ever seen. Sky, ground, VC, you name it. And I have the same hardware setup as a person I've seen say that it was a godsend.

Got my GTX 285, now lots and lots of FSX problems
ziffel replied to ziffel's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcHi, yes, I did use driversweeper in safe mode to remove the ATI drivers. Thanks for the suggestion nonetheless.

Got my GTX 285, now lots and lots of FSX problems
ziffel replied to ziffel's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcMy edit window closed on the above post ... so I'll add this, I did find the 182.50 drivers on guru3d.com.That said, I think I've made up my mind on how I'm going to handle all these issues. There are so many variables involved with FSX, that it's hard to get it all to work together. I get tired of fighting with it. So anyway, what I'm doing is just going into windows control panel and shutting down the 2nd monitor before I fly. It's a pain in the arse, but oh well. The texture flashing seems to be reduced quite a bit when I turn off the 2nd monitor, so I'm just going to leave the 197's on for now and just live with it. Right now, using FPSLimiter and nhancer, the sim looks really, really good in DX9. So the occasional flashing will have to do. In DX10 you get bad texture flashing at airports, so you just about can't win. At least I can't seem to. Thanks to all for the replies. I meant to reply to this too. I don't OC my video card at all, and I dont' think it's defective because the flashing doesn't occur in DX10, nor does it occur (or any other problems) in any other 3d games. And yes, if I ever find a solution to my multi-monitor problem, I'll be sure to let you know!

EZDok - simply the greatest add-on!
Ah, I see what you mean now. EZCA will move like you said, but by way of setting up cameras in various locations. With the PTP flag for the VC cameras, it will be as though you slide over to that position. Also, I'm pretty sure you can set a cam that will allow you to raise up, down, left right, forward, back etc. kind of the 6 degrees of freedom thing. I've seen it done it youtube videos. So what you'd do is set one camera like that to one button, hit that button then move around with it. I guess I don't understand why you want to do that. I don't mean that in an insulting way. It just seems to me that you'd want to look at something specific in the cockpit. You can set up those 'slide' cameras to get you anywhere in the cockpit fast. I'm new to all this though, and didn't have any established habits, so it was easy for me to make the jump to EZCA. With all the graphics and monitor issues I've been having. I can totally relate to this feeling.
