windows7 better ...or not

Featured Replies

I am running fs9 since many years and have invested quite heavy in add-ons, sceneries as well as planes. Now that my computer has gone dead, I got a new one,a 15.5 inch Vaio laptop, but they are all loaded with window7 as window XP is no longer available. Installed the programs but when I wanted to run them, it did not work and my dvd drive got busted. Now, is that the end of my flightsim days, do I have to write off all the investment in add-ons? Why is Microsoft doing things like that. I am all for progress but then the software should go in the same steps, after all its also Microsoft.

FS9 will work fine under win7.most addons are working fine under win7.first - install FS in it's own directory, NOT c:/programs. keeping FS out of the program directory allows you to get around the win7 'security features' that FS9 (and FSX) are not designed.second - look in the win7 support sub-forums here at avsim if you have trouble(s).with the above said, IMO, laptops don't make for great gaming computers ... heat buildup, slower CPUs and lower-end GPUs don't go well with FS. but, FS9 doesn't need as much 'horse power' as FSX so you may be OK.--

I have W 7 Pro64 as my OS. The 64 bit OS has caused me problems with all of my purchased Dreamfleet aircraft and Radar Contact 4. There are some work arounds for RC4 but due to a very old Garmin Trainer piece of software required for many of the advanced Dreamfleet Garmin 430/530 GPS their aircraft in a 64 bit OS will not function properly. It also appears that the primary force behind the Dreamfleet products has left the FS community. Also, there is a small trick required to add addon scenry, but that step only requires an additional mouse click but you need to read the post found in these forums.Another than those problems, most everything else works. In the past two months I have only reinstalled my GA aircraft and scenery files, but I understand that my big jets, should not have any problems when I get around to reinstalling them later this summer.Tom
