VC reflections

Featured Replies

I've been searching google for instructions on how to remove or subdue the VC glass reflections in the stock MS default FSX airplanes. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

The easiest option is to look into the texture folder of the aircraft and rename the file that has the word 'reflection' in it (just add OFF to it or something like that). Afaik all default airplanes use the word 'reflection' in their window texture. This will make the windows 100% transparent, so you don't only lose the reflections but also the tint of the glass (if it had any).To subdue the effects (or to keep certain things, like dirt and scratches, and remove others, like a heavy tint), you will have to edit the alpha channel in that file. I posted how to do this here. It starts with how to make the windows 100% transparent in another (harder) way than described above, but later on I explain how to use the same method to subdue the effect. This post was written for a specific plane, so you have to replace the file names with the appropriate ones. ;) Mind you, when you are going to work on none-default airplanes, you first have to figure out which file to edit because those planes usually don't use the word 'reflection'. Look for something like 'window' or 'transparency' or 'plexi'. Or simply open all files until you have the one you need. :( BTW My easy method doesn't work with DX10: with DX10 you will see the FSX-logo all over your windows. So if you happen to use the DX10-preview, you have to use the second more complicated method.I always remove all reflections but do try to keep some dirt and stuff on the edges.

Your best bet is probably the tool DXTBMP by Martin Wright, and you will probably have to learn how to tweak the alpha channel on the bitmap that contains the glass to reduce the level of reflection. There's no fast answer as far as how this can be done--every aircraft is different and some have bitmaps set aside for glass surfaces, others bitmaps share glass surfaces with other parts of the aircraft. Ok, thanks guys. I'm familiar with editing prop and glass (more or less) on ported fs9 planes, as well as using DXTBMP, and figured it was about the same with fsx planes. However, having a hard time getting a handle on which particular files to delete/adjust with the default planes. I'll look at Jeroen's suggestion of editing or removing "reflection" files.

Thanks J van E, thought your post only applied to the default 747.
