Why are my FS arrival times different to the airlines' ?

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm a bit puzzled, I flew QF63 Sydney - Johannesburg today in a B744 on FS2002. I had a headwind of about 20-30kts most of the way and was cruising at FL330 and Mach .90. The departure and arrival times on the Qantas website were 10.00 and 16.10 (local times) respectively. That's a flight duration of 14hrs 10mins. Yet my flight today on flight sim, lasted 21hrs 25mins. I arrived 7hrs 15mins behind Qantas' scheduled arrival time. Now, is that partially or mainly because of that headwind I had or is this just a big gap between real-world flying and flight sim? What is weird though, is that most of the time on long-haul flights where I follow flight times on airline websites with the aircraft they specify and flying at that aircraft's cruising speed, is that I normally arrive a few hours earlier than the airline's scheduled arrival time. For example, flying from Singapore to Sydney one time, I landed at SYD at 3.25am instead of Qantas' scheduled arrival time for QF6 of 5.15am. Does anyone else experience this? Am I not adhering to the same procedures as the airlines? Are the winds I'm flying in affecting my arrival times? Or is Flight Sim normally like this? Any help, explanations, or tips would be greatly appreciated! :)

Are you sure your flight plans are similar to the airlines?
