August 18, 201015 yr Hi guysI am thinking of buying a new PC for FSXSo I am planning on going with something like thisPSU: Corsair 850TX (or HX if I find more money ) I am getting 850W cause i am planning on upgrading soon :DCase: HAF 922Motherboard : GA-X58A-UD3R CPU: i7 920 with the MegahalemGraphics card : Powercolor 5870 (don't have the money for sapphire or XFX and since they are all reference design and with same clocks ..anyway..does anyone know if it comes with Dirt 2 ..the 5850 doesn't)HDD : WD 1TB CAVIAR BLACKRAM : Mushkin 6gb 1600mhz cl9Some LG DVD burnerI am going to overclock that CPU to 4-4.2 Ghz or as much as it lets me without some extreme Vcore..So I am wondering what do you think about the build .Can I expect the FPS to be over 20 when recording with FRAPS, with REX, GEX, UTX, Some AI Traffic at 30-60%, Fs Dream Team KJFK, PMDG 747 in VC, with some thunderstorm
August 18, 201015 yr I am going to overclock that CPU to 4-4.2 Ghz or as much as it lets me without some extreme Vcore..I don't see the needed upgrade from the heatsink/fan that comes with the processor. Art
August 19, 201015 yr Author If i use the stock heatsink it would get realllllllllllly hot on 4.2 Ghz on full load.. :Dwhat about my question ?
August 20, 201015 yr what about my question ?If you are talking about framerates, I don't have that computer configuration, and I don't have all those add-ons. But, I would expect that you will not achieve 20 fps in that situation. Your computer, however, may provide a smooth and flyable condition even if at a lower framerate.I generally only fly GA and stay away from the major airports. I would lower my settings if I did fly into these airports, but without lowering them I think I get around 14 fps. Art
August 20, 201015 yr Apparently noone really gave you a straight answer.I would change some things in that build. For one the GPU and RAM, GPU should not be ATI, it should be Nvidia you can afford, and RAM should be faster than 1600/CL9 - that is a very slow RAM. Start with 1600/6-7 or higher like 2000/9.It's all connected when you plan to overclock. Also I hear those P5T (I think) motherboards really rock when it comes to overclocking - I myself have a more expensive one, so don't know really. But UD3 is a really a basic thing. Read some reviews on how it overclocks. Also plan to get two hard disks, one for Windows, one for FSX - it runs WAY better like that, than everything on the same drive.Secondly, the answer not to use an aftermarket HSF - wrong, very wrong. I don't remember the last time I used a stock HSF, those are worse than anything else. Tried overclocking couple of times, even on the newer 920s, and it was bad bad bad. High temperatures, unable to quickly cool down. Terrible. At stock speeds, no problems. That is why it's called "stock HSF" :-) Can I expect the FPS to be over 20 when recording with FRAPS, with REX, GEX, UTX, Some AI Traffic at 30-60%, Fs Dream Team KJFK, PMDG 747 in VC, with some thunderstormNo. FSX ain't FS9. With such configuration, you should be happy to get over 10fps if you load it like that. Take away FRAPS recording, you could expect something around that. But for that you would need a GTX480...
August 20, 201015 yr Author Word Not Allowed, thanks for the answer!I am thinking of going ATI because I don't play just FSX/FS9 and I dont have to buy anything exccept the GTX460 in the nVidia range that is surely not as good as the 5870..In FS maybe but in other games no :DThan the RAM. 1600/CL9 is not that slow ..I can tweak the timings and get it to 1600/7-8 .. I won't see a lot of improvence in games but i would buy more money :D I am kinda limited in money :DGoing to the the motherboard..I read some reviews and Its a nice mobo ;DIt can easily overclock the CPU to 4+ Ghz .Also It has some nice features like backup bios, CLR CMOS buttons, and so.It has 12 power phases witch should be enough :DOfcoure I am not going with stock HSF :DSo It looks I rejected every single advice you gave me :DDon't get my wrong I know that the mobo is not that advance and the RAM timings are slow but I just don't have the money for more :DP.S Are you from Serbia Word Not Allowed?
August 20, 201015 yr No, I'm from Austria (born Croatian though).I can only tell you one thing: for my purpose and budget as I was buying my computer couple of months ago, I wasn't very happy with the tests of UD3 and decided not to go with it. Also with lower quality RAM, it was a no-go for me due to poor experience in the past. Now, as I invested into exactly those things, I got it exactly where I wanted it to go: 4.2 stable. You might have luck, but keep in mind - asking CL9 RAM to make an effort and reach CL7 is very much asking for trouble. You might need higher DDR voltages, which puts you in the whole new area.Anyway, if money is such a big deal, then you probably should go with the config you already wrote. And, I hate ATI btw... same thing with the experience, was a long time ATI user.

I was just wondering cause Word Not Allowed is a Serbian name :)The UD3R can get the i7 stable to 4.2 Ghz for sure :)I know cause I overclocked my friends CPU on that same motherboard.Yes maybe its not posible to go to CL7 from CL9 but who fps can i see in FSX because of CL9 ..maybe 2-3fps? what do you think?Do you speak Serbo-croatian a little?
August 23, 201015 yr CL7 instead of CL9 gives much better overclocking potential on the CPU, has nothing to do with the speed of FSX, that is what I learned the hard way. You won't even notice 1 FPS difference I think.Anyway, if you are persuaded that the configuration you proposed will serve your wishes to the fullest, then I don't understand the meaning of this thread. What "we" think is irrelevant and the speeds you wish in FSX are yet almost unreachable.
