Ok guys, some of you may have heard that Martinair are ceasing. in 6 days I am flying from Amsterdam to Aruba. In the past 12ish days the flight has been cancelled twice could be more though. Is this going to cause a problem for me when I travel? If your wondering why I am asking here it's because anywhere else I got nothing and you guys are greatCheers

Just guessing, but I would imagine it would effect the flights in the beginning but after other airlines pick up the slack would even itself out. I had a similar concern years ago with a flight I did quite often for my last job. This is the place to ask I think, so hopefully someone gives you a better answer soon.

Dylan,From what I've read, Martinair has announced cessation of passenger flights next year some time. Presumably, their sales have fallen off a cliff since then. And, if they are perceived as unstable, the Dutch businessman who needs to get to Aruba urgently is going to use KLM and pay their last minute fee, not Martinair. So, Martinair's announcement will probably cause them to move the cessation date up sooner, I would guess as people flee out of concern for the flight happening. But, since they are still running, I don't think you'll have a problem in the next couple weeks. Compare this to a situation where an airline goes completely bust and stops flying. People get stranded, and other airlines aren't so willing to help out in that case. My understanding of European regulations is that the passenger has more rights than they do in the States, but I don't think that set of rights requires, for instance, KLM to honor Martinair tickets to get you home. You might get a refund, but you're probably paying KLM for the last minute fare. Of course, the flights still might get cancelled. They are using MD-11's after all. <ducking>
