September 12, 200322 yr Problem: When certain third party aircraft are selected, FS2004 shuts down.Trouble spot found: My Panel for these aircraft.Specific trouble spot and item: RKG_speed! gaugesReason: Haven't got a cluePreliminary so you will know how I got here from there.I have been trying to implement ProFlight 2000 in FS2004 like it was useable in FS2002. I have been led to believe by another post and email that this is possible. As a result, I have installed, deleted, and reinstalled FS2000, and ProFlight 2000 several times trying varied combinations of setup.Gave up for the time being and deleted both. When I started FS2004 with my favorite default aircraft including my favorite generic panel, FS2004 failed, and I got the old MS sendto screen.I found the problem to be a RKG_speed!TAS_GS_S gauge. All other variations of the RKG speed gauges have caused a failure as well. Ironically, a partner gauge, RKG_fuelstat! gives no problems at all. I have used these gauges for years, and implemented them now for a matter of months in FS2004 with no problem, but suddenly, the speed gauge included in any panel shuts down FS2004.Really hate this as they are pretty neat gauges if you like to keep up with all of your perimiters.Note; I renamed my Flight Simulator 9 folder and installed a fresh installtion, copied an aircraft in question and it did the same thing. I realize that it probably retained some mystery files in windows from my original installation, and that is probably where the problem is, but I am not a good enough computer private eye to know where exactly.I guess I absolutely refuse to reformat and start all over for this one type addon gauge, but I sure am curious as to what happened.Any ideas?ThanksRTH
September 12, 200322 yr RTH,Not sure what is causing your problem, but I am running the gauge on several aircraft with no problems. I remember there was an update to the orginial gauge, but that was back when FS2K2 first came out.Good luck, perhaps someone else can solve it.K
September 13, 200322 yr From the readme.txt file for v2 of this gauge:"This gauge REQUIRES FSUIPC.dll version 2.86 or later. The gauge may work with other versions of FSUIPC. It was tested with version 2.86 of fsuipd.dll and WinXP with service pack 1 and Q306676 hot-fix from Microsoft which includes a new D3D8.dll for Windows DirectDraw3D. The Q306676 may not be required for all installations and fixes some Video card related problems. The Q306676 hot-fix is available from the WinXP update site at Microsoft.com. This gauge was tested with NVidia geForce2 and geForce4 video cards....If you believe this gauge is causing your FS2002 to fail just stop using it. Because of changes in FS2002 there is no longer direct access to certain internal variables so that this gauge uses a new method of obtaining the airspeed using FSUIPC.dll from within the gauge that may not work well in all possible installations. The FSUIPC.dll may itself cause problems with FS2002. You will know when it doesn't work - it will cause a Page Fault Error and crash FS2000 or may close FS2002 with no warning. If it does this on your system, please remove the gauge from your gauges folder. This gauge cannot do damage to your installation - it just may not work. The behavior of the previous version of this gauge has been fixed. When the V1.0 gauge was run under WinXP and FS2002 it would cause FS2002 to abruptly close with no warning or error message. This was apparently a WinXP problem possibly related to the inclusion of debugging info and exception handling code in WinXP. This gauge now includes exception handling code which makes it somewhat larger and unnecessarily complicated but does not seem to slow down FS2002."Do either of these situations match yours? You might want to look around for the newer version of the gauge.Doug Dawson
September 13, 200322 yr Author Thanks Doug:You indirectly led me to my problem.Somehow in the process of installing and uninstalling FS2000 and/or ProFlight 2000, I inadvertedly removed FSUIPC from my FS2004 modules folder. Have no idea how. Reinstalled, and everything is back to normal. Thanks again:RTH
