Q811493 - still an issue&

Featured Replies

Hello all,You might remember some time ago here was a discussion that MS update Q811493 for WinXP caused stutters. Is it still an issue after MS have released so many new updates (SP2)? I mean I update my system regularly from MS online update service, but I'm still avoiding this Q811493 one. I just think that it could have been fixed already in the latest Qs and no reason to skip it. Any recommendations? Thanks.

I had the problem, uninstalled and all was fine. Lately I reinstalled the newer version of Q811493. For me, at least, it caused no problems and no slowdown this time.

I noticed it in late April or early May with another sim I play. The slowdown was very noticable and I didn't know what the poblem was and just happened to see an article about the Q811493 on the PCWorld site.I took the fix off and my sim went back to normal speed. When the new version (May 18th, I believe) came out, I installed that one and it works OK.

I still haven't bothered to install it. If you read it's details, it fixes a security hole which could allow someone access to your computer, but only if they already had local access (already physically at your computer). "An attacker would need the ability to log onto the computer locally to carry out an attack"

Q811493 works fine as long as you make sure you download the May 18th version, it causes no slowdown what so ever. You can download it right here...http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en

This is the case with pretty well all of the patches for Windows. They nearly all pertain to the IE browser and the Outlook Express mail client which are both MS programs. Stay away from them, practice 'safe hex' and use a 2-way firewall, plus spyware detection progies and you shouldn't need to load any patches at all. Why fix what ain't broke??
