September 19, 200322 yr HiI've noticed that when trimming the elevator on the Meljet 777, I rotates the whole suface, being known as a Stabilator.I originally thought that a 777 has a general Tailplane and Elevator setup, where an elevator trim tab is built into the elevator. This doesn't seem to be the case with the Meljet 777.Does the real 777 have a Stabilator instead of the tailplane/elevator surface? Thanks
September 19, 200322 yr Hi,The 777 actually has a full trimming horizontal stab along with elevators and not a stabilator. A stabilator is what you'll find on fighters. The 777 trims using the horizontal stab and the elevators remain in what is called a nuetral position to the stab as it rotates. Just like on all other Boeing commercial jets :-)Cheers,JohnBoeing 727/737 Mechanic
September 19, 200322 yr Hi Johnhmm, thanks for that info. The horizontal stab. on the Meljet 777 does actually rotate, and from what your saying it seems Mel has designed it correctly. You learn something new every day.Cheers
September 19, 200322 yr Author I haven't seen the new Mel elevators (or haven't paid attention), but according to what was defined above as the correct operation of them...* When operating the elevator, an elevator "panel" on the horiz stab will move up and down.* When operating the trim, the entire horiz. stab. assembly will move, and the elevator "panel", if being used, will remain at constant relative angle to the stab.I *think* I saw this working properly on the Meljet, but I could be wrong. :) -Greg
