distorted sound problem

Featured Replies

Please forgive me, for I am new to this forum. I have a question that I hope someone can answer.I recently downloaded some add-on panels that require FSSound.dll. I did everything I was supposed to do...copy the .dll to the Modules folder, edit the fs9.cfg with {OLDMODULES} and added FSSound.dll=1, and put it at the end of the .cfg file. I also have the latest DirectX version (9b). I did all of these things. But when I try to fly a plane with the new panel, I hear an ambient hiss and crackling sound. When I switch viewpoints (to chase plane), the sound becomes so distorted as to render it inaudible. It sounds like and am radio station in a thunderstorm. When I went back to one of the default panels, the distorted sound was gone. This wasn't a problem with FS2002. FSSound.dll works just fine when I run FS2002.Any ideas as to the cause of this problem? I would appreciate any help I can get.--Matt

Has anyone experienced this problem?

This might be a shot in the dark, but since you have DX9.0b have you checked the Creative site for sound card drivers compatible with DX 9? That's the only suggestion I can come up with. I use the same sound card, but don't have DX 9 installed and don't fly FS09.Good luck.-Lindy

Also, use the dxdiag utility to access the DX9 settings and move the sound acceleration slider down to "Basic." I don't know about this specific issue but it fixed several sound problems for me. R-

I too encountered the same problem:P4 2.4 533FSBGeForce FX5200 128 MB512 DDRCreative Soundblaster Audigy 2 (previous card SB Live 5.1)DirectX 9.0bCH YokeThrustmaster Rudder PedalsSony 17" monitorSamsung 19" monitorPrior to the Audigy 2 soundcard I was running a Creative SB Live 5.1and encountered EXACTLY the same problems.I tried everything I could possibley think of including changing the acceleration in DirectX 9.0B as well as acceleration within the sound card settings menu. The only way I could totally overcome the problem was to disable 3D clounds from within flightsim....that is untill I bit the bullet and purchased the Audigy 2 soundcard..this has solved 99.5 % of the problems that occured when I was using the SB Live 5.1 card.I know this doesn't solve your problem unless you are willing to shell out some hard earned $$$$ for a new soundcard but at least you now know it's not you alone.Hope this info helps.C. HI,I am using a SB PCI card and had a crackling sound. The installation of the latest drivers didn't help much. It seemes that some SB cards are showing (letting hear ;) ) some incompatibility with VIA chips. I solved it with the installation of "vlatency-v020_beta21.exe" , search for "vlatency.zip" on Google. Regards,hm

Thanks for all of the helpful comments. I was originally puzzled by the sound distortion problem, since it is only associated with the use of FSSound.dll in FS9 on my computer. The FSSound.dll did not cause problems when I ran FS2002. It works like a charm in FS2002. I ran dxdiag a few weeks ago and again last night. No errors or problems were noted. I believe I have the latest driver for my sound card (based on the dates posted on the Creative web site). I haven't tried slowing down the acceleration to basic yet (I will try this tonight). I will also download the patch and see if it helps (if necessary).I'll let you know if these efforts resolve the distorted sound problem. Thanks all!--Matt

There's a new beta FSSound.dll for FS2004. I don't have the url for it right now but you might be able to find it with a internet search.Search the simflight.com forumRandall

The problem is soundblaster cards and Windows XPUpdate your soundblaster drivers via WINDOWS UPDATE, NOT CREATIVE.The last update i did included a driver update for "soundblaster" and since then NO SOUND ISSUES WITHIN FS9 or anything else.Microsoft have got something right for a change

Thanks for the advice. I downloaded the vlatency patch and this seemed to fix the problem for me. Now, if I could just learn to use the ERJ panel by Grabowski...:-violin --Matt

I'm not sure specifically what the problem is. You may have done this already. If so, please disregard. However, it wouldn't hurt to make sure that the following is included in your fs9.cfg file. Use square brackets around the word OLDMODULES instead of the { }. Some forums don't allow the use of square brackets when posting.{OLDMODULES}FSSound.dll=1Then, make sure a copy of FSSound.dll is installed in the MODULES folder of your main fs9 folder.--Matt
