AES oddity & Long Haul question.

Featured Replies

Hi all.First part of the header is an AES IRS align oddity I came upon at the weekend.I was following the basic tutorial, loaded FS9 with the Swissair MD-11 at gate 212, PMDG tutorial flight with electrics running and decided to set AES to align the parking to the correct placement. All went fine until I went to align the IRS and promptly came upon the issue that once FS9 was started with the Aircraft at the gate, using AES to align the parking deleted the N5238.1 and W00027.1 co-ordinates from the FMC F-PLN INIT page 1/3.Tried many times with different variations of the co-ordinates to align the IRS but no joy, kept getting a Format Error or Not Allowed message. Is there any specific way to input these co-ordinates if the happen to be deleted somehow without re-starting FS9 again?Thought it was something else I had done to delete them, but have since tried another 3 times at different Airports with the same result each time.If someone else could try it out to put my mind at ease that I'm not doing something else wrong, I would be grateful.Just be cautious if you decide to do the same as I did if there is no way around the issue other than a restart of FS9.__________________________________________Second part of the topic name.I have a choice of 2 Flights planned for this coming Saturday, my first one off in months.Flight 1 is LX-53 KBOS-LSZH, in or around 6 hrs 20-30 mins.Flight 2 is LX-39 KSFO-LSZH, 10 + hrs flight time, this being the preffered flight, time permitting. The question is, would this KSFO-LSZH flight be within standard ops range in days gone by for the MD-11 as modeled by PMDG?I would figure the ER version would be well able for this range.I realise the real flight is opd by the A340-300 by Swiss, but the lack of a full blown (decent :( ) FS9 simulation for the A340 is hindering me a little on this score :( All calculations I can manage here on a ZFW of 169.8 kgs suggest a fuel load at takeoff of 114,516 kgs including reserves, flight fuel of 91,949 kgs, vs a full fuel load of 116,225 kgs from the PMDG Load Manager.Note; all calculations via PMDG Load Manager, using Flightaware Flightplan input through fsBuild with weather data via ActiveSky Enhanced.I honestly think I might well have too much fuel on board as this is obviously on eastbound with wind assistance, but when is too much enough.Any small tips or advice before I embark on this epic flight for me in the MD-11?I have done similar flights many, many times in the 744 and a merge of a 777 panel and other model, but have long wanted to do the same in this beauty. Thanks for any advice and tips.

Regards.

I have been doing plenty of long hauls with the MD11, and like you I use real world routes from flightaware with weather by Active Sky Advanced, and the flight plan Imported into the MD11 with FSBuild. I find the fsbuild fuel load to be very accurate (with enough fuel for reserve) as long as you input the expected winds from ASA. The PMDG fuel loader does not account for the tailwind on a east bound flight, and the fsbuild will always suggest a lighter fuel load which is correct. All of my long hauls I ask for 30 minutes reserve, 45 minutes holding, 30 final fuel, and of course fuel for the alternate. Once I have the fuel loaded in the MD11 I go to the init page to see that extra fuel is 45 minutes. To get that figure, I type /0 in the route reserve line to erase that entry, because with the default entry the extra fuel figure is lower than it should be.So basically, when enroute or preplanning the flight, you should aim for 45 minutes extra fuel (which I interpret as holding fuel) the 30 minutes final (which is a mandatory minimum), and the FMC calculated fuel for the alternate.

Thanks A J, I have now re done my flightplan to reflect your advice and it looks a little better fuel wise, still a 10+ hour jaunt though.Wonder if she who must be obeyed will let me do the whole thing without speeding up the sim for a few hours lol.Anyone had the chance to check out the AES oddity?Tried it again last night and the same result, however this is still only while loading the basic tutorial flight, haven't tried any other startup session to see as yet.
