Here's a crop from my desktop where two MS Excel files reside. A while back a lot of my files lost their icons and also some files simply would not open with their respective program.Is there anyway to fix this? These two files DO open with Excel but just lost their icons...

Have you simply tried replacing them with new shortcuts or it keeps happening when you do that?

Well actually these are not shortcuts, they are the actual file but I've tried opening them and saving as, but they have not changed. All my excel files changed to this weird icon. It would be time consuming to change them all back (even if I could figure out how to do it)
