Stumbled over the announcement of a new Flightsoft scenery product on the main page. I had their Hong Kong scenery back in the days of FS2002, are their sceneries for FSX any good? At least they look interesting (e.g. Africa) and it seems that they've added a decent DC-10...

Difficult to tell from just the product page, and I'm personally not inclined to take a gamble based on that. They appear to be a bit cagey about showing anything too detailed on the DC-10, and they're not exactly very forthcoming on anything else in relation to the products apart from indulging in a lot of flowery marketing blurb which doesn't get into specifics about what you actually get for your money, and at 35 Bucks, that approach is something which tends to set my alarm bells ringing. I could be wrong though, so don't take that as 'gospel', it's just my feeling. I couldn't find a cockpit shot for the DC-10 for example, and although I wouldn't expect it to be a payware masterpiece given that it is part of a bundle and so the jet is effectively a 'bonus', I'd at least hope to see a picture of the cockpit given that they do want those aforementioned 35 bucks. Their old (FS2000) DC-10 was actually not a bad effort, not up there with the best payware available at the time, but it had an okay flight model and a reasonably decent panel. That said, if this is just a tart up of that DC-10, then it won't be up to the standards of other ones you can get for the money. The old-style FS Adventures they used to make were pretty good too as I recall, but one would hope they could push the envelope a bit more given what the FSX Mission feature is capable of, and I'm not seeing much evidence of them claiming that has happened on the product pages. There's nothing wrong with products which are a collection of flights and a plane thrown in for good measure of course, for example, the First Class Simulations product, Around the World in 80 Flights is an example of where that can be done well. But by comparison, when you look at the product page for that, they don't mask what you are getting with a lot of flowery marketing talk and they do show you screenshots of the Lockheed Electra which comes in the product, as well as a video of the product in action which includes what the VC of that Electra looks like and what the external model and sounds are like.In contrast, that Flightsoft product page all seems a bit vague, and considering some of the customer reviews on Simmarket for a few FS9 Flightsoft products are not exactly what you'd call glowing recommendations, I think caveat emptor might not be a bad idea unless you have money to burn. I'd like to be proved wrong, because some decent adventures for FSX which make use of the missions feature would certainly be a welcome product, but if you want my opinion, I think Aerosoft's African Airstrip Adventures would be a safer bet if you are looking for some out in the wilds flying fun on the dark continent. Aerosoft's effort is product which I do know is worth having, not least because I reviewed it for Avsim and recommended it for a Gold Star Award, which it thoroughly deserved by the way, because it's a great set of entertaining missions interlinked in an engaging game format probably not too dissimilar to what MS will aim for with their forthcoming 'Flight' if they have any sense, as well as being a fantastic scenery package too.Hopefully someone who has one of those Flightsoft FSX products will chip in on this thread, because I too would like to know more about the more recent offerings from them, but if I were you, I'd wait until they do before opening your wallet.Al
