Tileproxy vs. SBuilder

Featured Replies

Hello folks,Could I ask, how do the resolution of ground images processed by Tileproxy and SBuilder X compare?I've been used to using SBuilder so I'm a bit hesitant to try and setup, configure and learn how to use Tileproxy if the results in FSX are comparable. Thanks in advance

BMP scenery tiles are not quite as sharp as original jpg imagery, but pretty decent at 1m and 2m. Interesting question; I was just pondering the reverse.Tileproxy has to use some overhead itself aside from the scenery it makes. Since I get better performance with finished photoscenery, I am beginning to wonder if it would be worth it to make scenery for just the areas I'm likely to fly around the most frequently. The Tileproxy bgl's control lod7-sized regions - just like FSX scenery bgls. I rarely want or need that much coverage so I've occasionally considered alternatives like SBuilder. I don't know if SBuilder needs multiple levels of imagery like TileProxy or just the final resolution. I've used a small region of SBuilder-downloaded imagery in Tileproxy and the reverse should be equally true.As you probably realize, photoscenery is massive and the ease of use with Tileproxy makes it easy to just keep going and going and going...Perhaps the optimum solution is SBuilder for very "local" scenery and TileProxy for larger regions.Ultimately, it could depend on whether you can get TP set up and running to your satisfaction. If you have storage to spare, give it a try. Ideally, scenery folder and caches on separate drives and away from "program files".Loyd

Hi Loyd,I appreciate you taking a step back and making a good judgement based on what really matters - our Simming habits! As you say, the temptation when using a very useful tool such as TP is to get carried away, then forget the kind of FSX flying we actually enjoy day to day. I need to ponder a bit more and try to find the motivation to get past Window 7's aggressive behaviour toward TileProxy's driver and actually get TP running! Ah well. If I get over this hurdle and configure it right, I'll certainly give it a go.Thanks again for the reply.Dave.

I'm currently flying Acceleration on W7 without TP (my XP install with TP is still functional though), but there are numerous posts here describing what's needed to get it working properly with W7. Take time to read back through some of those previous posts. If I can help, feel free to email me (click my username and scroll down for email link - in case you didn't realize that). I'm so busy with Multiplayer these days, I haven't had the 'motivation' myself to install on the W7 OS yet.On the other hand...I'm using a lot of FREE ready-to-run photo scenery from Bluesky scenery for central California, Utah, Colorado and Glacier National Park in Montana. You can certainly enjoy these while you decide.Loyd

Hi Loyd,Thanks for the guidance, and thanks to you and the forum here, I managed to get TP started and configured so I'm currently seeing the results. I have to say I'm mighty impressed! You were quite right saying SBuilder is ideal for relatively small areas and gives good enough resolution for most of us...I still have to learn how to tweak the TP config details so I get the best from the available data and also my own setup.I appreciate the offer of more help too Loyd - I may just need to drop you an E Mail or three at some time when I get brain freeze :oOne crazy question - Will I always have to run TP to see the scenery it has already downloaded / processed and compiled, or can I 'choose' and 'use' the scenery from a specific area just by setting up the scenery and textures for FSX somehow? Hope this makes sense.Dave.
