PSU temp measurement?

Featured Replies

I just had my computer hard shut down on me twice. The ambient room temp was really warm ( I lock myself in office while rest of downstairs is like 60F... cold haha).Anyway I was playing Red Alert 3 for a long time and the room temp had to be at least 80F. The PC shutdown. I turned it back on as soon as it shut down. Then it shutdown again before Windows could load. So I've waited about 10 minutes, opened the door so the room temp is back to around 70F.I figured it was my PSU shutting down everything. I checked my bios temp monitors and cpu/mobo/chipset were all normal temps. So I'm wondering if it is possible to monitor PSU temperatures? Is there a utility somewhere for this?

If temperatures get too hot, then your motherboard will most likely shut the computer off to protect it. The reason why temps were normal when you checked was because it was likely a few minutes after it shut down, and temps in a computer drop like a rock when the computer is turned off. If the BIOS sees the CPU temps get above a certain level (Usually 90C on Intel chips, not sure what it is for AMDs), it will shut the computer off to keep the chip from frying. You said the PC shut down. Then you said you turned the PC on as soon as it shut down. I would recommend against doing that, especially if its 80F in the room, which I'm sure you noticed at least once before you had problems. First, I would open the case and run it like that until you fix the problem. Next, I would keep that door open. You should also get this: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/. Install it, go into settings, and check "Start With Windows" and "Close Core Temp to System Tray." This way you can keep track on this stuff at all times. As to a solution, I would look in the direction of your CPU. What sort of cooler does it have? Did you properly apply thermal paste between the CPU and the cooler head? What thermal paste did you use? Does the case have proper airflow?Things like this.
