Backdoor Virus Warning!

Featured Replies

While happily sim flying last night the following warning came up on Norton:-Backdoor Sinit virus detected.Svcinit.exe infected. After following removal advice, now I am having problems booting up fs9. It is having to setup scenery indexes again. Now I believe that this svcinit file is a generic file across windows, but I am unsure if this is the reason for Fs9 boot up problems I am now having.Whereas I do have broadband, so wide open to anyone, I believe this infection could have occurred when accessing real world weather.Just a warning!Ronald Glasgow

Strange The only thing I have downloaded and Installed recently Is the latest gforce driver and after this was Installed I noticed on booting Into FS9 It started Installing scenery filesThis only occured on the first use after the updated driver was Installed, ....... Ihavent run my virus scanner since, will let you know If I find anythimgRegards Bryan

I just ran my usual Sunday morning Norton full system scan and it did not detect any viruses. After reading this post I did a search for svcinit.exe and did not get a hit. I then did a search on svcinit.* and no hits there either, so it does not look like it's a valid XP file, however I do not have broadband.Check the Symantec web site.

This is a backdoor trojan and _not_ a legitimate Windows associated file.If you conducted the removal as per the instructions, you should not see any further reference to this file. Are you using a firewall while connected to the internet? Don't depend upon antivirus programs for the sole prevention of trojan attacks.

Thats odd. I did the opposite! I updated my GeForce driver after the virus stuff had forced scenery installation.I am sure its all a coincidence, or has been some date activated virus, I was just worried about weather updating site being corrupted with this virus.I have to say, along with others on my isp, I am being hammered with viruses, as many as 3 to 4 a day!! To be fair Norton has got them all, I hope! Indeed now my isp is checking every e-mail before sending, making e-mail downloading wven with broadband a pain in the ****.Is it not great fun having to go to the registry and manually delete lines!(lol)RonaldGlasgow

Thanks for all teh replies, really appreciated! The svinit file is apparently:-"svinit is used to run daemons that are vital to the system such as DHCP, name server, email, secure shell, HTTP, and FTP daemons. svinit starts and monitors any kind of daemon or program that has the capability of running in the foreground.""So there!(lol) Knewed that all along so I did.(g) What the hell is a daemon and why do I need them I ask!I did follow Nortons detailed instructions and got rid of the virus.I agree about Firewall, and I shall start getting organized with one.RonaldGlasgow

I got the reindexing scenery as well. I wonder if it has to do with the change to daylight standard time?

Your PC is probably full of spyware and all kinds of other crap! Your surfing habits will probably be known to a spyware company .... download and install these FREE programs:1) Zone Alarm firewall (bullet-proof)2) AdAware (Spyware removal utility)Act now!! :(

I think you are correct - see the other thread. For it to happen in relation to this virus attack, I suspect, is just coincidence.Mike

Hi RonaldJust read your post re the problems your having with the backdoor virus.I'm interested to know who your ISP is. I'm with NTL Broadband and for sometime they have been telling me that the network is so badly infected and that it will take time for all machines on the network to be disenfected. Of course this is the responsibility of individual NTL Broadband users.NTL assured me today that The Network is clean within NTL but stuff that is already on infected machines externally (Joe Public) just keeps bouncing back and forth. On another note re Norton, it isnt the best product in the world and can slow down your connection terribly. You could try Sygate Firewall available from www.webattack.com. It's free and very good.Alternatively download a copy of Zonealarm Pro from zonealarm.com and then acquire a crack for it. Not that I'm advocating such behaviour, but every little helps.Wycliffe

Wycliffe,U and Me both! NTL advised me the same as you, and e-mails are all being checked again.Firewall being downloaded!!(lol)RonaldGlasgow

I'd recommend spybot search & destroy in addition to adaware. It catches alot of stuff the adaware misses.

Yep, particularly agree on this last point. Every now and again, Spybot catches something AdAware missed - and vice versa. I've broadband (not NTL) and so far Norton (IS + Antivirus) has served me superbly for years. (BTW, I didn't have this svinit-whatever thing either).Cheers,Paulhttp://www.strontiumdog.plus.com/cin.gifwww.bavirtual.co.uk/cin.htm - please give generously!!Officially licenced by British Airways plc for use of name and logo[p]AMD XP2800+ Barton, Gigabyte GA-7NNXP nForce2, 1Gig Crucial PC3200 DDR 400MHz, Gainward 128 MB GF4-4200, SB Audigy, 3 x WD Caviar SE[/p]
