Throttle controllers doing strange things...

Featured Replies

Hi allI have recently made a set of dual throttles, two axises, which work on 100kohm linear pots, ( as recommended by other builders). I hooked up two buttons and every thing was fine, with no problems calibrating and using them...However, I have added two more axises (100kohm, linear pots) to use as trim and pitch adjustment...I hooked them up according to another guys recommendations (15pin setup) Here is the catch! When I go to calibrate them, when the throttle arms (axis 1 and 2) are in certain positions my computer says they are 'not connected' and if I move the throttles off idle it says they are 'connected ( ok comes up)Finally, in my diagnosis I noted that when I slowly move the new axises...eg the trim wheel...the little cross in the grey square will start to move also ( but the throttle arms are stationary)..I went an brought two new pots, but it still has the same problem.Has anybody come across anything similar? and if so any idea about how to fix this problemregardsDAryl

Hi,How many degrees do you have the pots moving? I found that sometimes Windows will say they are not connected if the pots move past a certain point. Can you try and make the pots move with less rotation? Also try and set up the pots so that they are in their centered position and the throttle handels are are mid way between idle and full.Hope this makes sense; if not let me know.Ed

Hi Daryl,I assume:- you use them directly on the gameport (not via a USB convertor on USB) ?- you installed it as controller "Joystick 3 axis" with rudder/pedal option checked ?- you have only one gameport active in your PC ?This sounds like a wiring error somehow (or a faulty gameport !)Since you say the the calibration cross (for axis 1 and 2) also moves when you axis 3 or 4.FYI: Windows will only say that a gameport controller is "Not Connected" when either Axis1 or axis2 (pin 3 and 6) has infinite resistance with +5V (eg. pin1).Normal cause is "deadspots" or dirt on the taper, but since you already replaced them plus the fact that axis 3/4 interferes with axis1/2 this cause is ruled outRob

Thanks Ed and Rob for helping us out...I have the pots moving about 90% of their arc (at a guess). I have tried to calibrate them using less swing ( i put stoppers at either ends) but to no avail... When I calibrate them I measure the swing and make sure they are at the halfway point.Yes, I am connecting directly to a game port. Yes, I have tried several different ones...even created some custom ones..where it lets you pick the number of axises..I use a sidewinder f/feedback2 as the main controller (USB) and then the throttles through the and removed it after your suggestion..and still got the same result.I have attached the wiring diagram as recommended, it worked okay with two axises...does it look okay?Yeah, I guess I will have to try another sound card in order to rule out the game port...I will get another 15pin plug and re-wire it just to make sure there is no shorting between the pins...Yes it strange to watch axis2 move when 3 and 4 are moved..thanks again for helping us out..daryl

Hi again,It has been a couple of years since I did this but I think the pots may be wired in correctly. Take a look at this page,http://users.chariot.net.au/~samstain/joystick.htmlYou will see that all four pots are not wired together, Ax and Ay are wired together and Bx and By are wired together but not all four.Let us know if this is the problem or not.Ed

Hi Daryl,Yes, the schema is correct ( it's mine :-) .I'd check your wiring first, make sure there's no shortcircuit.(measure with an ohmmeter ON THE 15pins connector). And also check that you have no connection between any of the pins and the cableshield !The diagram shown by Ed does the same. The gameport is designed such that you cannot induce a shortcircuit by accidentally mirroring the connections (where 1=8, 2=7, etc)That's why pin1,8,9 and 15 are all +5V and 4,5 and 12 are all 0V.So it doesn't make a difference which powersupply pin you use.Rob
