Generic PnP Monitor becomes Generic non-PnP monitor

Featured Replies

After nearly 4 years' use alongside 2 matching LCDs, bought at the same time, one of my monitors has decided it is no longer 'plug n play'. Every means I can think of has been tried but it stubbornly remains in its newly adopted mode. How does this happen? I've read a number of threads in other forums - none of them really conclusive. The mysterious acronym EDID gets mentioned, but as that stands for 'extended display idnetification data' I am not sure where pursuit of that would lead.Does a monitor have inbuilt firmware that enables it to be recognised and to operate at its native resolution? The new state it has adopted restricts it to some lesser VGA res so it is useless for my needs. I operate FSX across 3 screens with 2 GTX460s SLI linked.Does anyone have an answer to this? The screens are ViewSonic 20" (Model VP2030b) and are now out of warranty, so no technical support is available through ViewSonic.Grateful for any inputFrank Jones

Have you tried to

  1. Unplug that monitor and restart Windows and setup only the single monitor.
  2. Shut down windows and plug the second monitor in again.
  3. Restart windows and setup the second monitor.

Thank you UlfB. That is one of the many things I've tried, but no luck.I suspect the monitor has developed a fault, but does that sound likely to others more experienced with hardware than I am?Frank

Out of warranty means "no free support". Have you tried contacting ViewSonic Support? Companies usually keep supporting their products for the lifecycle of the product, well beyond the warranty period, with paid repair, spare parts and sometimes may even recommend a reapir station local to your location.Cheers,- jahman.

Thanks jahman. I did that and was given the phone number of their post-warranty repairer, who quoted reasonable evaluation and repair prices, but would not say, either way, if such a fault was due to an internal hardware failure. So I have them as an option, but I may buy 3 new screens. That will give me 2 spares! The downside is that 4:3 are getting scarce and their 16:9 successors seem to be inch for inch cheaper. Dell have some 20" I like the look of.RegardsFrank

I hear you, likely new 16:9 prices compare favourably to a repair of your old 4:3 screen.Cheers,- jahman.
