Navigating airways

Getting back into the simming after a bit of a break.Been getting ontop of flying a heavy following a properly researched and filed flightplan, then doing what I can to please Mr controller in Radar contact. Had been going really well from Seattle to san Fran to Vegas to Atlanta to New York.Planning a flight out of NY KJFK bound for London, the SID Hippie3 has various routes off the various runways. By now I was becoming confident enough to follow the SID and deal with radar contact throwing the odd thing at me, but after take-off I followed runway heading as instructed then ATC reeled off a load of letters to me. Follow alpha, bravo, tango, blah blah, PANIC! I just turned as best I could and headed for a waypoint on the plan and ATC got really rather shirty with me.What plan should I be looking at to know what route he was vectoring me along. They don't seem to correspond to low or high altitude airways in fsnavigator and nothing on the SID document that I can see.

Hi mole_man.If you were using RC at the time, you will surely get a better response by reposting in the Radar Contact forum though I suspect the first few replies will be questions regarding what other addons you use, and what you use to create the flightplan. I haven't heard any instructions like that from RC's controllers myself, but then I only use FS9's internal planner...Regards,D

Not a problem with RC. More my lack of nav knowledge. I shall try over there.
