Rain in Severe Cold - ASE

Featured Replies

OK, this has been addressed once (Rain at subzero temps), but I think this is something that either needs to be better addressed, or if there has been a fix, I'd like to have reference made to it so I can download it. In greater than 50% of the cases when flying in northern Canada and I receive an interpolated METAR (made from within ASE), it includes precipitation that is almost invariably in the form of rain. Last weekend I was on a run from Sioux Lookout (Ontario - CYXL) to Cat Lake (CYAC). CYAC did not have a full report, but I believe there was at least a partial METAR. The temperatures were listed as -17C and dewpoint -28C. ASE inserted the precip, but as rain, not snow. Yes, you do get inversions, but not to this extent where the clouds were less than 3,000 agl, and even if you did, an inversion this strong would be few and far between. This is a regular occurrence with me and happens almost anywhere in the north that I fly. In addition, if one had an inversion this strong, severe icing would be reported in the METAR somewhere, but none exist in the METARs showing in ASE.Is there not some way this can be controlled, or mitigated? I believe in the link above, someone mentioned a switch that would prevent rain, or make any precip present become snow if the temps were below zero? At this point, I now run FSX in windowed mode and ASE on my second monitor so I can change the METAR to read SN instead of RA whenever this occurs. If there is a fix for this now, could someone please direct me to it?Many thanks for the help.

Hi,I would like to know what the 4 actual data stations were reporting for their precipitation when this happens for you.

Well, there hasn't been any single one or set. I've had this happen in northern Ontario, southern B.C., northern B.C. and the Yukon, as well as in the UK. The stations around where I started out were either reporting snow, or no precip at all (most often the latter - the precip seems to get added on its own by some interpolation). Next time it happens, I'll gather whatever data you need. Just tell me what I need to get for you and I'll post it here. Thanks!

Hi,1. The name of the interpolated station.2. Click on the Interpolation Details icon and give us the precip. codes from the 4 actual data stations. No matter what, we can't link the type of precip to temperature data. We need to use the precip codes in all cases.

OK Jim, thanks. I'll keep an eye out for this and next occurrence I'll supply the requested data. I'll be in touch :).

Hi guys,I happened to be flying along in Canada and captured a couple of examples.First, here is CAJ3 with interpolation stations CYXC, KGPI, KSZT, CWJR.ase2011feb9001.jpgase2011feb9002.jpgase2011feb9003.jpgase2011feb9004.jpgase2011feb9005.jpgAnd here is CBE2 with interpolation stations CWGW, CWGM, CWJR, CYXC.ase2011feb9006.jpgase2011feb9007.jpgase2011feb9008.jpgase2011feb9009.jpgase2011feb9010.jpg

Hi,I see cwjr with negative temperatures and light snow. I guess you could ask how is it snowing with no clouds.I see cwgw with negative temperatures and no snow. I don't think anything is wrong with this report unless I am missing something? Both stations being under Advanced Interpolation. I dont see any data from the 4 actual stations in either case. And I see nothing from the original stations mentioned.

Jim,If you look at the first picture of both examples, the CAJ3 and CBE2, you will see that its raining even though the temperatures are -13C and -17C respectively. I believe this is what BeaverDriver was referring to.

The stations you mentioned above are stations that the "rained" on stations are being interpolated from.To clarify, the photos are:1. Station CAJ3 --- Interpolation stations CYXC, KGPI, KSZT and CWJR2. Station CBE2 --- Interpolation stations CWGW, CWGM, CWJR and CYXC***edit for drunk fingers and clarification*** :)

Hi,Sorry, I was at my school computer and I don't think I saw all the pics when I posted before.I believe you, but what I would like to see is one picture after you click on the Interpolation Details Icon and a little pop up box is going to show with the 4 station's data. And also, in your second example, 3 of the stations are also Interpolated and those can never serve as data for another interpolated station. Then the other station is Suppressed so that station will not be used either. In your first example 2 are suppressed and one is Interpolated.I hope you are not just pulling up the 4 closest stations because they need to be the 4 nearest stations that are not suppressed and have actual data. That is what the Interpolation Details Icon is going to show us automatically without you hunting around for the data.

No prob Jim! I know the life of a working stiff too!! :(

Nope, I'm not hunting for the closest. I clicked on the Interpolation Button and thats the stations it gave me.Here are screenshots of the interpolate window it gave me:CAJ3:ase2011feb10001.jpgCBE2:ase2011feb10002.jpgThanks for your time Jim!!

OK, got it again this morning, this time in the YukonThe Report METAR is:CFP4 101047Z 11401G02KT 10 SM BKN093 OVC 121 -RA M14/M16 A2979 RMK ADVANCED INTERPOLATIONInterpolation Details:NE: Dist 45 CYMA 1010000Z 00000KT 15SM -SN OVC080 M14/M16 A2980 RMK AS8 PCPN VRY LGT SLP147SE: Dist 96 CXCK 1010000Z AUTO 34001KT M15/ RMK AO1 T1152 (*NOTE: That's not a typo after M15/ - there was nothing after the M15/ until the RMK)SW: Dist: 124 PAOR 101053Z 00000KT 10SM BKN050 OVC110 M15/M17 A2981 RMK AO2 SLP152 T11501167NW: Dist 117 PAEG 101053Z AUTO 12007G14KT 10SM FEW070 BKN095 M08/M13 A2979 RMK A02As you can see, the only precip mentioned anywhere (other than my current station) is for CYMA and that is listed as light snow. All stations are far below zero and except for CYMA list no precip.Hopefully this is something that can be tracked and fixed as otherwise I have to kill the autodownloads and install the weather in the Weather Configurator, changing the -RA to -SN.Thanks much, I look forward to your comments.Glenn

OK, next incident. As I said, this is happening in about 50% of my flights. This really needs to be addressed. Below are the data you requested for this issue:ASE_Rain1.jpgThis shows the current METARASE_Rain2.jpgThis shows the interpolation data as requested.Hopefully there is an answer coming for this folks. This one is way out of whack, and where it's getting the -RA command from is a mystery to me, given there is nothing anywhere that would suggest this as a viable option. Thanks, looking forward to your comments.

Hi,Please note that I am letting the programming team know so that they can look into this unfortunate situation.

Thank you Jim. Appreciate that.

Hi All,Here is a programming fix for this:http://dreamcatcher.hifisim.com/ASE-Update-B644.zip Please give it a try and report any problems through the Support e-mail address.
