MD-11 startup problem - low temp, smoke

Featured Replies

Apologies in advance if this problem has been discussed elsewhere. I've tried searching and haven't come up with any answers, though, so I thought I'd tried here.I'm new to the MD-11 (relatively new to airliners, really, after a long time in GA). Trying Tutorial 1 in FSX. On engine start, all engines seem to give normal indications. However, in external view, I notice that Engine 3 is smoking badly. When I advance the throttles, Engines 1 and 2 generate thrust, but Engine 3 doesn't. The EPR gauge moves to show commanded thrust, but N1 and the rest don't change from idle. On the SD engine page, Engine 3 shows a low temperature indication (temperatures vary from 19 - 24). All other indications are normal. My specs below are a little out of date - I'm now using a CH yoke and a set of CH throttle quadrants, with a separate throttle for each of four engines. The throttles perform normally in other aircraft. However, I've noticed one oddity in the MD-11 - there's a bit of jitter at first in the VC throttles when I move the quadrant throttles. This goes away if I move the physical throttles repeatedly. However, calibration also seems a bit off - when the physical throttles are at the idle detent, they call up reverse thrust in the MD-11. I need to crack them slightly to get out of reverse. Again, this is exclusive to the MD-11. In all other aircraft, reverse and idle behavior is normal. Throttle calibration is done through FSUIPC, bypassing FSX.Thanks for any insight you can provide. I'm sure I must be missing something completely obvious, but as I said, I'm new in this territory. Looking forward to your answers and to getting further into this great aircraft.Alan Ampolsk

OK, running through some tests and have discovered that, when loading the aircraft in the default state with engines running, only engines 1 and 2 are operating. Engine 3 shows blank on the engine display. I suspect I may be dealing with a corrput install. Am going to try an uninstall/reinstall and see what happens. FYI that the problem seems to have nothing to do with my throttle setup - the throttles do need a bit of "exercising" when I first get into the cockpit, and need to be cracked slightly so as not to invoke reverse thrust, but if I do that, the other engines run normally. The only issue is Engine 3 and its oil temperature indication. Will report back after I see if a fresh installation helps.Alan Ampolsk

And the answer was... a corrupt install. Uninstalling and reinstalling fixed the Engine 3 problem, and also seems to have fixed the throttle calibration issue. Hope these posts do somebody some good at some future point. Off to fly the thing now...Alan Ampolsk
