Adding New Liveries - a checklist

Recommended Posts

Problem: You have downloaded and installed a new livery (repaint) for your favorite aircraft - but it does not show up in your aircraft selection screen.Solution: Using the following "checklist" should help you find the problem.Assuming you Copied the new texture folder and Pasted it in the proper airplane folder, and assuming you Copied (using Notepad) the [fltsim.n] data which was provided and Pasted it correctly into the aircraft.cfg file:a. The title= line must be unique (if it duplicates another title= line, the new texture will not display)b. The sim= line must refer to an .air file which you have (without the .air extension) in that aircraft folder. If it calls for sim=abc, and you only have an .air file named xyz.air, the aircraft will not display.c. The [fltsim.n] sections must be sequential, starting with [fltsim.0] and following with [fltsim.1], [fltsim.2] and so on.Be sure you edit the new data's [fltsim.n] section - replacing the n (or X or whatever) with the next available sequential number.d. Check the manufacturer= line. The author may have provided another name here - example: manufacturer=Opa & friends instead of manufacture=Boeing. If that is the case, you can either edit the line or remember to look for that manufacturer on the aircraft selection menu.e. Check the model= line also. It must call for a model folder which you have. If blank, it will use the folder named model. You might find the line reads model=VC. If you do not have a folder named model.VC, then the aircraft will not display.f. Check the texture= line. If the new texture folder is named texture.ABC, then the texture line must read texture=ABC Note the period between the texture and ABC (occasionally it is missing)g. When Copying and Pasting fltsim data, be sure you get it all. It is very easy to miss the first bracket. example: fltsim.n] instead of [fltsim.n]These are a few "checks" I make whenever I add new liveries to FS2004 or FSX. Taking the time to do so has saved me a good deal of head scratching!Of course it is wise to read the file description carefully before you download - to be sure you already have the aircraft installed that the new livery is designed for.Hope you find the checklist useful. :(

A couple of other things:[fltsim.00] will not work. Use [fltsim.0] only as the first entry. If you are adding an AI aircraft, and you don't see it displayed in the "Select Aircraft" window, the .air file might be set to not display this plane. Use AirEd or another program to read the .air file. The value of "aircraft type" should be zero to display, 2 to not display. If you see an all-white plane, the problem is the texture.

Just to clarify:That only applies to FS2004 air files - (the line in question is line 105).In FSX it is the presence, or lack thereof, of a "valid" panel folder. If there is no panel folder or it is aliased to a non existant panel, then FSX assumes this is an AI only aircraft and will not display it on the Aircraft selection menu.
