A CANBERRA BLISS FOR RAF FANS

Featured Replies

The recent fs9 Canberra payware models from FLYING STATIONS are in my opinion the best models of that great plane ever made. I have done nothing else but fly those since I got them some days ago. They include some rare marks never seen before, the textures are finely made and the colours to the correct shade, and they feature some wonderful animations—platforms and props appear when you shut engines, you can launch the Rushton targets, many things open up, etc. The sound is also great and it can also be used for other Canberras you may have. Though similar to the Bill Holker ones, they are quite different and of better quality, the skins marked by the expertise of a very good graphics artist. The site is http://www.flyingstations.com/ and Steven Beeny is to be warmly congratulated for his creations—I only have the Trainer and Target Tug pack but I intend to get the other packs soon. A must for any fan of the RAF, and the old lady flies right and looks right. Today I flew the TT.18 from RAF Wyton to RAF Coningsby and I itend to continue with another skin to Lossiemouth--it gave me an extra touch of reality. The site also offers many other fascinating a/c for avid fans of the Fleet Air Arm and the RAF. Screenshots below: T4Fradu.jpgT19.jpgTT18.jpg

Screenshots below:They are excellent visual models and they do fly well - but the VC is not even close to current payware standards unfortunately and I think that's probably why very few people have been inclined to purchase them. It's a shame as a really great Canberra line would appeal to a fair number of people with fond memories of a great aircraft T4Fradu.jpgT19.jpgTT18.jpg

Hello Kiwiflyer45,Steve Beeny, creator of the Canberra line here. First and foremost let me thank Jinx for his kind comments. While has no commercial connection at all to Flying Stations, such a glowing review is much appreciated. Now, normally I would not post back on something like this, and I do of course believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, this being a forum and a free world. I do however, feel your comment, Kiwi, on the VC being not even close to current payware standards, was a touch harsh. Admittedly, it is not at the standard of many FSX creations, but you may or may not be aware of the poly limitations that FS9 developers have to work to. It is therefore, harder to both a) bash out every single nut and bolt in glorious 3D and also get the high level of sharpness that you get in FSX with 2048x2048 textures. Personally speaking I think my VC was on at least equal par to the more expensive Alphasim Canberras, and actually contained more features in the VC. I would also like to say that my sales, while perhaps not as stellar as some of the other big boy companies out there, were respectable enough, and there was not one single complaint at any point about the quality of the VC.I do not want to come across unnecessarily defensive here, but I found it a bit much to say that a sub-par VC was the factor in letting down a line of Canberra models, which on the whole have been very well-received. Again, you are always entitled to your opinion, customer or not, it's just I felt I had to address this one. All the best,Steve

Hi SteveI appreciate your comments and the courteous way in which they were made. I definitely agree with you about the Alphasim offering - and I do understand the limitations of FS9 which is what I use. (That's what this forum is for).. But we'll have to agree to disagree about the VC. I think if you could upgrade it you would have a first class product as the external model is wonderful. I can give you numerous examples of outstanding VCs that give great performance along with fidelity to the real world. (Isra's Mirage III, David Maltby's BAC 1-11 and Comet IV, Rick Piper's HS748 are some freeware examples along with many others) But I understand that it's a difficult art and admire all of you who are able to do what you do. Without you this would be a dull hobby and this discussion wouldn't be taking place! :)CheersIan

Hello again KiwiFlyer, what a pleasant suprise to encounter such civic response on a forum these days, where comments can often come off too hostile or defensive and things get out of control. I appreciate your opinion even if the VC is not your cup of tea. The examples you quoted are all stellar, and certainly my VC is not on the same playing field as those. As I say though, above all I feel it did maintain a respectable par with Alpha's model, which for me, as a relative newcomer to the world of modelling, was good. Future releases will continue to improve, although this will be on projects other than the Canberra. I do hope that you can get some enjoyment out my Canberras regardless; this as you may have guessed, is my all-time favourite aircraft and I would like to feel I have done some justice to the type for the FS9 world. All the best to you,Steve

Hi SteveI have many fond memories of the Canberra also and am glad you have provided the community with an opportunity to see and fly this great aircraft. If your first project is this good, I am certain you will provide outstanding products in the future as your experience grows and I will be looking forward to seeing what you are able to come up with.Cheers mateIan

Cheers, Ian, I have plenty more in the pipeline and am definitely learning each time. I think I might venture into some FSX development this year as well, after I wrap up some loose ends. That will certainly make the poly count a lot easier :)ATB,Steve
