December 17, 200322 yr Can anyone tell me if if makes any difference at all to fps speed if I have all my add on scenery being used directly as oppose to cacheing the scenery which are the two options you have when adding on scenery. Does cf9 load up scenery thats not required into available memory if you have the option of the scenery being used directly selected. And if you have lots of add on scenery does this start to eat up your available memory?Any Ideas anyone?Don:-zhelp
December 17, 200322 yr Depending on your configured visibility distances ALL your scenery will be loaded on the fly, new scenery being called for as necessary. Thus the difference between installed and "cached" scenery will concern how fast the new scenery can be loaded. It stands to reason that the access time on a HD will far outstrip that of a CD drive, so unless you have HD space problems I suggest you load everything directly to the HD. As the new scenery is only called when needed, the only penalty attached to having lots of add-ons is in HD space !What you will find, however, is that photo-real scenery such as the UK-VFR sets and presumably the recent US photo scenery will take longer to initially load, and as more textures need to be loaded as you progress to "new scenery" these areas effectively require you to fly slower, to allow your PC to keep up - not a problem as scenic VFR is pointless at 20,000-30,000ft ! Fly too fast and the scenery will start to blur as the PC falls further and further behind. The UK-VFR team suggest limiting airspeeds to around 150kts. Initially loading the UK-VFR scenery on my PC frequently takes several minutes, but once loaded the FRs are no different to elsewhere. Also bear in mind that to optimise the ability of the program to concentrate on the scenery you will need to consider limiting your frame rates. I limit mine to 20fps which allows my PC to concentrate on quality. Such balances aren't possible if you insist on FRs of 50-60, unless you run a state-of-the-art super-computer ! Hope this has helped,Alastair
December 17, 200322 yr I agree with Alastair that if you have the HD space, then running scenery directly is best. Having said that, I don't believe that either option (direct or cached) affects frame rates. Rather, it seems to me, that it causes pauses where everything visual just stops for up to a second or two. It's very annoying, especially if it happens at the wrong time (when landing for example). December 17, 200322 yr Thank you Ron and Alastair.CF9 offers you this choice everytime you add on scenery but never explains where or why you would use one option over the other. You both have cleared the air on this and I thank you. I can continue on knowing that at least Im doing this much right. lolDon:D
