Improving fps?

Featured Replies

Hi folks!I've bought a new CPU recently and am quite disappointed by the performance with FS. I'm not sure what went wrong here but I get fps fluctuating between 5 and 15, giving me a lot of stutters here and there and this is at quiet Macau International. At places like LHR, LAX which I fly to more frequently is worse, especially when AI starts to move around.I have settings AA set at 2xQ, 80MB for PCI, high performance overall and MIP off in my video card and this I consider has degraded quite a bit of image quality but I still get frames like 6 or so. Most of my settings in FS are at 80% average. What's wrong? I think I might havre made the wrong decision to get the MX440? Anyway I have got 2 hard disks, totaling up to 100 GB if that is an issue.Any advices? Thanks a lot! I haven't bee enjoying FS to full with fps like that! Even in cruise there's a straight line at the horizon, doesn't blend in at all. Tried the TableFog and it didn't help too.Intel P4 2.66Ghz848P ChipsetWindows 2000512MB RAMGeForce 4 MX440 AGPX8alvin

With your system, the MX440, was a big waste of money, you should go and get a FX5700 Ultra, or 9600XT, then you can have the full potential, and if money doesnt matter, then go for the 9800XT or 5950 Ultra. The GeForce 4 MX series, are really just cards for basic games, even if you bought a GeForce 4 Ti 4600, you would see a huge differene, but since it's now an older chipset, I would go for one of the ones I mentioned above.

>>With your system, the MX440, was a big waste of moneyI wouldn't necessarily agree with that.I used to run FS2004 on a Toshiba laptop with an Intel 2.6 Ghz processor and an NVidia GeForce 4 440 MX card. Performance was quite acceptable except at high density airports or in very heavy clouds. However, I did have to turn some of the sliders down a bit and I didn't use Autogen or AI traffic, both of which are performance hogs. Having said this I was getting fps in the range low 20s to mid 30s and the sim was smooth, which is the important thing.Of course, getting a better card is going to improve things as I have found out on my new PC but that's only one part of the equation. The mobo, memory and processor all contribute towards overall performance.David

Set the card to `best quality` as this seems to help the rendering of mipmap transitions in the sim. I don't understand how or why you have mip off in the video card - the options are best or high quality, blend or best or high performance. If the box is empty, then at some point you have used some tweak utility to adjust the mipmapping so you have mipmapping. Just set it to High Quality and forget it.>Any advices? Thanks a lot! Instead, try updating the drivers to the latest 53.03 from the Nvidia website, reinstall DirectX9.0b and, most importantly, delete the FS9.cfg and reboot the sim - this forces the game to re-recognise the card and computer attributes and may allow you to see an increase in fps. Finally, check with the mobo manufacturer to ensure you have the latest chipset drivers for your machine.Hope this helpsAllcott

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I ugess when I save up I'l just get a Radeon card. the MX 440 I've done everything I could but to no avail to improve to acceptable framrates. Thanks agaiN!

I don't think it's just a video card problem. The MX isn't a very fast card but that, alone, won't explain the lousy framerates. Have you reformatted the HDD and installed the latest chipset drivers for the motherboard? If not, I think doing so will greatly improve the situation.Doug

i have a AMD 2.4, 1.25gb ram, XPhome; with almost all maxed out i see mid 20's. same card. fsb still @166. couple of things; using BlackViper http://www.blackviper.com/ as a reference, disable all running apps that u don't need; [gf4mxdsp.zip search 4 this]=2 tweak the card; get rivatuner , disable aa in fs, u should b able 2 leave the other items "on"; with rivatuner installed, start it, it'll find the card, click the "customize" arrow in the lower section, click textures, select directX8 and the last box should now be checked, this will prompt a restart, BUT, cancel restart, click "ok" click the first tab 4 the video card click enable driver level hardware o/c'ing, then restart. once it's back up and running, open rivatuner, and direct draw, and try setting of;mip=1.8//vsync=off//prerender=2//texture filter= balanced//aa = 2; force in all apps// enable multisample. there are also lots of presets u can try; click the "?" and put cursor over anything u don't understand, click and u'll see what it does. also, lots of searching thru these forums will divulge[haven't used THAT 4 a while] a wealth of ideas to set u're system. remember, each system is different, u're settings may/will b different; any changes to cfg's should ONLY b done after making a back-up copy. have fun . tt

Thanks guys for the suggestions.. I got the Radeon 9600Pro and now the frames are very very good. Twice as fast compared to the MX!

My rivatuner doesnt have these options. Running newest version, with 3.10 Omega driversodd

>My rivatuner doesnt have these options. Running newest>version, with 3.10 Omega drivers>>oddbump

Guess Ill just use Omega's ATI Control panel to set these settings them since rivatuner isn't doing it.
