Over the Pole???

Featured Replies

Has anyone made a flight over the North Pole? and can you do it inFS2004?

Yes I have! Maybe! Its very interesting and hell on navigation systems!I think I did it, but I am not 100% sure(lol).

I only tried it in FS2002 so far. I never did reach the pole on that flight though LOL. I think the most FS2002 (I cant confirm for FS2004 yet, haven't tested) is 89* 40' and no farther. At that latitude the plane does extremely weird things too. You no longer go forward, you slide left LOL. The FS2002 scenery engine (I think the same goes for FS2004 since its so similar to FS2002) fails flat on its face on extreme latitudes. Load up airport 'Alert' and you can see exactly what I mean. You can try it, but because FS2004 is so similar to FS2002, I doubt you can fly right over the pole, you can get real close though.

The pole limit is a shame for M$.One man projects like Orbiter or X-Plane don't have these problems.

The MS world is a cylinder, not a globe. That's why you can't fly over the poles.Allcott

Allcot,Really? After all these years I had never realized that!Better tell Mr Gallelio that he was wrong!(lol)

>The pole limit is a shame for M$.>One man projects like Orbiter or X-Plane don't have these>problems.Until recently, X-Plane didn't even have as round of world as MS, which accounted for many inaccuracies in it's navigation data-base. If you can fly the poles now.............. then fine! Although I really don't know if it's possible, even though I own the program.L.Adamson

>The MS world is a cylinder, not a globe. That's why you can't>fly over the poles.I very much doubt it. If it was true all nav-dependent programs (like Garmin's GNS530) would fall on its face giving incorrect distances, headings, etc. at latitudes even around 60 deg. All classical great circle equations would not work and we know they work quite well in 99% of the globe. The reason's that FS doesn't work over the North Pole may have to do with the way scenery is tiled. If tiles are based on lat/long grids then there will be a 'singularity' at the Poles causing all sort of side effects - the behaviour of the sim would be 'undefined' in that area.Michael J.http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg
