September 10, 201114 yr Author Rónán, how much manual flying would you do on an average flight? Rónán is probably such a beast pilot he flies with his eyes closed, he is so good that his company gives him Triple hours, he is so good that he moves those ailerons from the wing, actually stepping out and grabbing them, he isn't an ordinary pilot. His name is Rónán. Coming to an airport to you SOON
September 10, 201114 yr Rónán, how much manual flying would you do on an average flight? That depends on the situation really. Most flight's out of DUB I'll hand fly to FL100, accelerate if the speed restriction was still in place, start the climb again, then let the AP take over. If there was no restriction and I'm already established in the climb, I'll just put it on at 10,000'. Some days out of DUB due to weather, they'll fully abandon the SID and basically give you discretion to the first way-point. In that case, I'll just hand fly to the first way-point [or till I'm away from the weather] as it's easier to hand-fly around clouds than selecting heading after heading after heading. Then there are days when I just don't want to handfly, when I'd rather just sit back and monitor. That isn't often, maybe every one in say, 10 flights. Then there are those big airports with crowded TMA's and TCA's where it's just safer to use the AP and have two pilots monitor the frequency more closely. Places like JFK, [which for the record I avoid like the plague], and LHR just don't facilitate manual departures safely. For approaches it's basically the same as above, below 10,000' or if it's a busy destination then once established on the glide. Rónán is probably such a beast pilot he flies with his eyes closed, he is so good that his company gives him Triple hours, he is so good that he moves those ailerons from the wing, actually stepping out and grabbing them, he isn't an ordinary pilot. His name is Rónán.Coming to an airport to you SOON Darn, I know, I just hate those days, We really need to install hydraulics back into our aircraft, this is just becoming a nuisance, all these cost cutting measures are driving me nuts... lol Rónán O Cadhain.
