IAN procedures? Question for RL NGX pilots

Featured Replies

Since the NGX is equipped for Integrated Approach Navigation, it seems relatively straightforward to use IAN for such approaches. In performing the ILS 16L approach, I crossed CLIFF at the mandated 11000 and 210kts in LNAV/VNAV mode. The MCP altitude was set to the FAF crossing altitude of 7000. The descent arc required the use of speedbrakes in order to maintain the correct speed (and the early extension of landing gear helped, too).

Just prior to the FAF at LEETS, APP was selected on the MCP and the FMA annunciators indicated that FAC (Final Approach Course) and G/P (Glide Path) were armed. Both became active around the FAF and the descent along the final approach course occurred down to minimums, flaps being deployed along the way. Three hundred feet below the FAF altitude, the missed approach altitude of 10000 was dialed into the MCP.

Landing was pretty straightforward (which means I only bounced it once :-(), but otherwise this seemed very similar to an ILS approach. Amazing that such a tight procedure has been developed for KDEN which seems to be in the middle of nowhere with all the airspace in the world, but there we are. Also amazing that a VATSIM controller would assign this approach.

Reference to the IAN procedure is FCTM section 5.61.

Best wishes,

John

in this forum. I was doing research on IAN and posted in an old thread. If anyone can move it over there, that would be great.

Sigh.
