Moving FS2004 from one drive to another

Featured Replies

I have 2 hard drives on my computer, a C drive with has some stuff on it (including FS2004) and a D drive which has almost nothing on it. If I wanted to move FS2004 to the D drive could I just copy the whole folder to the drive then delete the C drive one? Or would I have to re-install it on the d drive from scratch?

There is nothing stopping you installing FS on either drive but you can't just copy it across and hope that everything will work. The safest way to do this -if you have no addons and the old FS9 is just a clean copy is to uninstall the old one - remove any leftover files etc then do a clean install on the other drive. If you have lots of addons that you want to save, then make a backup copy of the old FS on the D drive but rename it as anything else once copied ( EG D/FS9backup).Uninstall the C drive FS9 and again clean up any leftovers(including registry entries).Install new FS9 on D, then copy the folders(EG Aircraft,Addonscenery, textures etc) with addons in the backup(FS9Backup) copy to the new copy(D/Microsoftgames/FS9) allowing overwrites.I did it in a similar manner with FS2002 a couple of years ago with no problemsDave

How about this...If you just got a new computer and want to put FS on it can you do a fresh install then burn a DVD Data copy from your old system and just replace all the files with the exception of the FS9 config file?

Easy: just move the folder to the new drive, then edit this registry setting to reflect the new location:http://www.reality-xp.com/support/knowledgebase/1004.htmFor FS, this is it.Now, if you have other add-ons, they most likely don't have a special folder location but the root FS folder, which is referenced for most add-ons from this standard FS registry key.If after moving the FS folder some add-ons do not work, simply contact the vendor for more information about the stored location of the add-on folder (registry, INI file) after having explained what you have done.Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies guys :-)I did what Dave suggested to do in the first reply. Lucly I only have 3 payware planes I had to re-install and 8 payware airport scenery to re-install, everything else is freeware.Everything is working just fine on the D drive, and I have more space. My D drive is 55.89GB and only thing installed on it is FS2004 (and some downloaded FS files) there is 45.42GB of free space avalible and 81% of it is free.
