Hi, I do not post much on the forum but I have been following PMDG for a few years now. I have a question about a new system I am thinking about building. I currently have an i7 980x and I am thinking about upgrading to an i7 2600k. My question is, should I upgrade to the 2600k or do you think that I should wait until the Ivy Bridge CPU's come out and upgrade then? Thanks alot Garrett Dinkins

You already have a great CPU, especially if overclocked. If it were me I'd wait for ivy bridge. See how they're priced & oc abilities versus the sandybridge, which has already set the bar pretty high.As for your i7 2600k thoughts, unless you do a lot of work in video editing or 3-d rendering I'd suggest the i5 2500k. It will perform identically in fsx & costs a lot less.

I don't think you should buy a new CPU at all. I can remember looking at the web at some benchmarks, the i7 980 came as best out of the test! Better than the i7 2600k. That's why is such an expensive CPU!If you really want to update to a new pc, and don't want to spend too much money on a CPU. I would get the i7 2600k over the i5 i5 2500k. Because the i7 2600k has got hyperthreading (like all i7's), and this will make some difference in fps. It's not that much better compared to the i5 2500k though, but I'd say always get an i7 for FSX.About the rest here's a good possible setup for you:Mobo: MSI Z68A-GD65CPU: I would just re use your i7 980X.GPU: NVIDIA GTX580 1.5 GB. If you have less money I'd get a GTX560ti or AMD HD6950, both great.RAM: Corsair Vegeance 8GB DDR3 1600HDD: depends on what you want. I'd get a seperate drive for FSX.PSU: OCZ 700W (should be more than enough).

I thought they were going with a different socket for ivy bridge. The op's 980 really is an excellent CPU, but the 2500k would offer some advantage due to higher oc's and I believe more instructions per clock.

They will, eventually. First IB chips will be LGA1155 (by mid 2012), then later LGA2011, the new socket due out late 2011 initially for Sandy Bridge E
