Can FS2K2 and FS9 coexist on same computer?

Featured Replies

Hi. I had FS2002 installed on my computer and wanted to install FS9 so that I could have both available. I checked with MS and they said it could be done, but not to put them in the same directory. OK, fine, I did the install of FS9 on the same HD, but gave it its own folder away from the MSGames folder that FS2K2 is in. FS9 seems to be OK, but when I try to start FS2002, I get messages saying that the terraintextures.cfg and scenery.cfg files are either damaged or missing and then loading of FS2K2 stops. I guess I can drag those two files from the FS2K2 disk and replace them, but the real question is will these two sims coexist on the same computer?Any tips on this would be appreciated. Thanks,

They coexist on mine quite well... The trick is to trust Microsoft and let the installation program for FS9 do its work. By default, it would have installed FS9 in a different folder. I suspect during your effort you either overwrote or moved these files in your attempts to put fs9 somewhere else... Before you do anything else, do a search for terrain.cfg and scenery.cfg on your hard drive. If all goes well, you'll find two copies--one set where FS9 is installed, and the other set wherever they got accidentally put--unless they were somehow deleted, that is...-John

I had both installed on the same computer without any problems but when I decided to uninstall FS2002 it also deleted some folders and .cfg files from my FS9 folder! So be carefull when you decide you no longer need FS2K2... ;-)

I figured something like that might have happened as I even noticed an FS2K2 file in the FS9 folder, but it wasn't one of those in question. I'm assuming the TerrainTextures.cfg file goes in the Textures folder, is that correct? Also, and this is really a dumb question, but I've been away from this stuff for awhile, doesn't the basic FS2002.cfg file reside in the FS2002 root folder? I looked and couldn't find it there. Maybe it's been misplaced, too, and the loading process didn't get far enough to tell me.Thanks.

When you install either game it wants to put it into C: program files microsoft games flight simulator2xxx. Maybe you should install FS2002 and then install FS2004 but install to a new folder OUTSIDE the "microsoft games" folder. I had FS2002 and FS2004 on one PC perfectly succesfully but I installed one (FS2004) into the root/default directory (as shown above) and put the other onto a second drive into just "FS2002".Both ran perfectly happily, and when I screwed up FS2002, it uninstalled with no bits dissapearing from FS2004.

In FS2002, the main .cfg files reside in the root folder... -John

Yarvelling, you wrote:"When you install either game it wants to put it into C: program files microsoft games flight simulator2xxx. Maybe that was my mistake. I thought about doing it, but MS said no problem if they were on the same drive, at least that's what I thought they said. Oh, well, I may reinstall both on separate drives if I can't find the lost files and get it working that way. I'm getting a new computer built and only intend on running FS9 on it, but in the meantime for comparison purposes thought it might be nice to have both available. Thanks,

I would think so, they're basically the same but for one difference: FS2002 is a real prude, but FS2004 thrives on gratuitous nudity.

I've had both games in the same drive without the slightest problem.I have also uninstalled both without any problem, and reinstalled them without any problem...At all times, I just let MS decide on the directory, and it put both games into C drive.(default).I have also installed/ uninstalled /reinstalled CFS2 likewise, without any problems whatsoever.I therefore wonder why anyone would have the slightest problems with these processes. At the moment I have all 3 games mentioned here in the same drive, with lots of add-ons and mods I have made or added :1.400+ more new aircraft in each game (FS2002 Pro, FS9, CFS2).2. S Combo , Hogen's Arrestor Cables and Carriers, Lago's Tornado in FS2002 Pro.3.Self-made folder in each game called "ps" in which I place sound and panel folders and alias them to the various aircraft.4.Many new sceneries I made myself and others I downloaded for all 3 games--some placed within the game directory, others in a different folder in C, outside the game directory.5. In CFS2, lots of extra stuff and mods (effects, dp mods, sceneries, new missions etc etc)6. Many new texture files placed in FS2002/Texture for the Scenery-making program "Airport For Windows"/All of the above has had no adverse effect--all 3 games run smooth as silk.
