FSX upgrades ?s

Featured Replies

I'm thinking of upgrading from FS9 to FSX.I have a lot of nice payware add-ons for FS9, and would like to hear ya'lls opinions/suggestions for FSX add-ons.I'm not sure what the difference is between, REX and UTX+GEX+FEX? Does REX do the same as all 3 (UTX+GEX+FEX)?If you have something like Fly Tampa St. Maarten does it look BETTER with one of the above? Or Will the Fly Tampa scenery take over for that area of the world and then REX or the others only affect areas outside of the Fly Tampa areas?I really enjoy GA flying more than big iron.I think what I plan on doing is keeping my FS9 payware planes, and all the extra stuff for my VA flying (i.e. Wilco Airbus/E190/ERJ...etc) but use FSX for my GA flying. If I purchase something like the FTX/Orbx sceneries for my GA flying will adding REX or UTX+GEX+FEX improve the FTX/Orbx? Is it necessary? Or would adding all these things only slow the performace and I would be better off only adding 1 or 2, not everything? I didn't know if it would be redundant to have multiple environment addons. Thanks for any suggestions, tips or ideas.I'm going to list the specs of my new PC, not sure if that information will help in answering some of these questions. I bought this PC to be a Flight Sim only PC so hopefully it will be able to do what I'm looking for.PS Specs:Intel Core i7-2600 3.4GHz,8GB DDR31.5TB HDD802.11 b/g/nNVIDIA GT520Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bitI also purchased 8GB (2x 4GB), PC3-12800, DDR3-1600MHz to bring the total to 16GB DDR3.Thanks again for any suggestions/tips on the environment add-ons.

Yup; return the 520, and change it for a 570, 580 or a 590.

REX=textures for better looking clouds, skies, waters (reflections), runways and then some. It also includes a weather engine (which is ok) and a flight planner (which no one uses afaik...)UTX=real roads and real waterlines (rivers, lakes, etc.) and new landclass (which tells what is a town, what is industry etc.) for specific regionsGEX=generic groundtextures for specific regionsFEX=the same as REX but old and although some findsome textures of FEX nicer, REX is the one to getFTX=the same as UTX and GEX together but also has new mesh and landclass, for specific regions. Imho FTX looks a LOT (and I mean A LOT!) better then UTX and GEX! FTX regions are different then UTX and GEX regions and often (?) smaller. But it offers everything UTX and GEX offer in one package, meaning it works perfectly together, it blends seamlessly together, and FTX also has different textures for every regions, while GEX uses the same textures all over the continent. GEX might look better then FSX default, but FTX turns FSX into a new sim.My advice:1. if you like GA, going low and slow get FTX (my personal favorite is PNW by far). Imho it blows UTX and GEX out of the water... You could get UTX and GEX to cover regions that FSX doesn't cover and that you really want to fly over, but a lot of people refuse to leave FTX regions because they are the best. I fly nowhere else anymore than in PNW (and sometimes I fly in PFJ and NRM). I rather fly above a 'smaller' but great looking region than above a large but mediocre looking region.2. Get REX to complement FTX: REX will give you great skies and clouds and water reflections which look a lot better then default FSX, specially the clouds. You could say that REX offers everything that FTX doesn't offer, so they work great together, complementing each other. In short: FTX and REX are the addons to get! And forget about the rest unless you really want to fly in a region that FTX doesn't cover yet... ;) BTW REX is still very useful of course when you do get UTX and/or GEX.

Awsome! Thank you gents.I'm waiting for the new PC to come in the mail. Then I'll load up FSX but have been looking around at the different sites, FTX, REX, etc...and they all look really good. I just don't want to go overboard and bog my system down. I'm assuming it will run FSX and possibly some FTX add-ons and still give me decent frame rates....hopefully.

BTW Be sure to get a good CPU-cooler because you have to overclock that CPU to at least something like 4.5. The default speed of 3.4 won't cut it.
