Hyperthreading and shader 3 mod

Featured Replies

Hi all,Just two short of which I can not find the answere on the forums.1. I used Bojote 's tool to tweak my cfg file which increased fps a lot.I had to choose if i had hyperthreading enabled or not. I have it enabled but is that the best option for fsx? I have the i7 990x overclocked to 4.3 GHz. So HT on or off for this CPU is the question??2. Does shader 3 mod increase performance in fsx with à nvidia gtx580 Card??Couldn' t find those Answeres in any forum. Thanks Kim

The online configurator adds a number of tweaks that are also beneficial for nVidia cards, but the primary onus is shader 3 replacement for ATI/AMD cards.Cheers,- jahman.

To make use of HT on your machine, a program needs to run in more than four simultaneous threads. If there is more, your operating system can optimize the workload of a core by mapping it as two logical cores and thus drive two threads per core. Unfortunately FSX can't make use of it, for the above mentioned reasons. This is the case with most of the other games too, as there is almost always no performance gain running games in that many threads, but you still make your programming a lot more complicated.Should you then disable it? It depends. You might achieve a bit higher overclock without HT, but on the otherhand 100-200MHz higher oc is pretty useless IMO. And I couldn't overclock my 920 a single MHz higher turning HT off. It also depends on what else you are doing with your rig. If you are using some other software running on several threads or run several programs at the same time, then you will lose performance compared to HT on (generally HT perf gain is somewhere 5-30% depending on the program). IMO the whole point owning a core i7 9xx is pretty much HT (and of course VT-d, but this isn't relevant here), because if disabled, you can achieve similar performance with cheaper alternatives without HT. I will surely keep my HT on, it was one of the reasons to buy i7 a couple of years ago with VT-d and a good overclocking ability at the time. Newer Sandys of course take Nehalems hands down in this area as well as in IPC.

Thanks Guys for these replys. As i understand from both reply 's i Will leave HT enabled since I am not looking for an higher OC and it does not influence performance. As I understand I also do not get à benefit by installing shader 3 since I use the nvidia card. Am I right about this? Then since Bojote 's tool doesn t ask if I have the I7 And GTX 580 are there some specific items in fsx.cfg which I can adjust because I use those components??ThanksKim
