Hi,I am thinking about buying either AMD Radeon HD 6970 or 6950. The 6970 costs £50 more than the 6950 and I was wondering if there would be any noticeable difference in performance between the two.6950:http://www.scan.co.u...splayport-2x-dv6970:http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-xfx-hd-6970-dd-cooled-pci-e-21-(x16)-5500mhz-gddr5-gpu-880mhz-1536-cores-2x-mdp-dl-dvi-i-dvi-hdmBesides that, does anybody know if either of these will perform well with FSX. I currently have (had) a HD 5770 which is broken and Im looking to replace it with a new GPU to match the quality of my CPU (I7 2600K). But please feel free to recommend other GPU's (preferably under $350).

nVidia cards perform better with FSX (FSX is a very old program that uses Shader Model 2 (Or 3, with Bojote's mod) rather than the Shader Model 4 most games use today).Additionally, AMD is releasing the next gen 7xxx video cards as we speak (specs here), so you might want to wait.Cheers,- jahman.

On my system my Sapphire HD6970 outperformed my previous ZOTAC GTX570 amp edition so it can't be a bad choice imho.

Go for nvidi, I can't get ati to draw clouds without problems. I have a hd6940m. I read everywhere that nvidia does work better with clouds.

My experience might or might not be valid but I am running 2 x HD 6950's (Sapphire 2GB Dirt3 Editions). Both had the switch for dual BIOS and both unlocked to the HD6970 shaders. I OC'd them to 880 and I really cannot tell if FSX is annoying them even a bit. With TRIXX software I set my fans to manual control, spin them up to about 75%, and set my case fans running on 80% and launch FSX. The only time I have seen the system sweat is on DX10 mode. But since I think the FPS limiter affects that (DX9 hook?) I cannot say what causes the issue. I have heard for years that nVidia is THE way to go with FSX but ATI has yet to let me down and I have been around FS since I was 12 (31 now). So I am sure I am missing out...but what I dont know I cant miss. That being said if you can get a GTX 580 for cheaper or same price or a 6990,Toxic Edition 6970, or any of the other big boy cards for a steal...JUST DO IT.Good luck.

  1. Did you install Bojote's SM3 tweak?
  2. What are your FPS with lots of clouds like?

Actually you can now go for a 7970 :Big Grin:Cheers,- jahman.

Jahman,I did indeed install Bojote's Shader 3 mod. Clouds are always set to max draw on max resolution using REX Overdrive. With the NGX, flying over a dense city (approach into KJFK, no ai traffic), in a snow storm, I am pegged at the FPS limiter of 30 FPS. It spikes up and down but the real beauty is no stutters! I am very pleased with this build and I think FSX is as pegged as I need it. Technically my rig would benefit from the PCIe 3.0 available on the new 7970 but at the prices it will come out at I could buy 3 6990s and do something ridiculous (I won't do this). Eventually when those 6990 prices drop I'll crossfire a pair of those but not for some time. A long long long time. My setup:CPU: i7-3930K SB-E 3.2 Ghz (OC'd to 4.7, 4.6, 4.4, or 4.2 depending on how I feel)Mobo: Asus P9X79 DeluxeRAM: Corsair Vengeance (8x4GB) DDR 3 (9-9-9-24)GPU: 2 x HD6950 2GB Dirt 3 Editions (Crossfire'd, 6970'd, and Eyefinity'd)Storage: 2 x OCZ Vertex 3 120GB (FSX and supporting junk); 2 x Crucial M4 128GB SATA III (OS and other necessaries); 3 x 1TB WD Black CaviarPSU: Cooler Master 1200W PSUCase: Corsair 800DCooling: Corsair h100, Gelid 9 fan array, Lamptron Touch ControllerOS: Windows 7 x64 System is AIR not Water cooled
