March 22, 200422 yr Hi all, I've noticed that sometimes when I make a really smooth greaser touchdown with some aircraft (especially the PMDG 1900), I can barely hear the mains making contact with the runway. Is this possible in real life, i.e. making such a smooth touchdown that the pilot does not know when the mains are down initially? Thanks for any responsesBTW is there any way to increase the sound level of the touchdown wavs in the sound config files?J.C. March 23, 200422 yr Greetings,In the "sound.cfg" file:(B)LEFT_TOUCHDOWN(:(filename=bmtouch1, bmtouch2, bmtouch3, bmtouch4minimum_volume=6500maximum_volume=9000(B)CENTER_TOUCHDOWN(:(filename=bmtouch5, bmtouch6, bmtouch7, bmtouch8minimum_volume=6500maximum_volume=9000(B)RIGHT_TOUCHDOWN(:(filename=bmtouch9, bmtouch10, bmtouch11, bmtouch12minimum_volume=6500maximum_volume=9000The numbers can be raised, maximum value is 10000...(:(=square bracketsHope this helps..JR
March 23, 200422 yr JC,Theoretically possible, but both unlikely and highly undesirable. Airline pilots always make a firm contact with the runway for 4 reasons (that I know of!):1. In order to spin-up the wheels as quickly as possible so that the brakes become effective quickly.2. To positively activate the air/ground sensors (switches in the undercarriage suspension that detect when the aircraft is on the ground) so that auto-spoilers, auto-brakes and reverse thrust will operate.3. In a crosswind to gain maximum tire traction as soon as possible to prevent the aircraft drifting sidewase on the runway.4. On a wet runway helps to prevent the wheels from aquaplaning on the surface water. This can continue for a surprising distance and has caused aircraft to overrun.Hope this is what you're looking for!Chris Kirk
March 24, 200422 yr "Is this possible in real life, i.e. making such a smooth touchdown that the pilot does not know when the mains are down initially?"I don't know about the pilot, but I fly pretty often as a pax, and over the past year I've enjoyed a couple of greaser landings where my first sensation of being down was the sound of the rolling wheels. It doesn't happen that often, probably for the reasons already stated--I can count on both hands the number of similar landings out of nearly a thousand I've experienced in a lifetime of travel.A flight I took into Bologna nine years ago has to be the most extreme opposite to a greaser... I nervously noted the pilot beginning the flare way too high, and a good ten feet above the runway (although higher from my perspective as a pax), we just dropped into the ground. I found a couple of items broken in my baggage, the landing was that hard, although I was relieved to see I wasn't broken :) I swear everyone on that aircraft let out a gasp when the wheels hit the runway.-John
March 24, 200422 yr I remember my hardest landing...Surprisingly in a C-5, with all those huge tires you'd think it would cushion the blow. We flew TIK to Ramstein AB GE, and hit the runway like a ton of bricks..I mean, it was a "bang"! Wonder if he filed a "hard landing" with the mechanics...Tho I love those landings where you can actually feel the wheels spinning up to ground speed. That's almost worth the price of the ticket!Dave
March 24, 200422 yr Had a bouncer with three bumps at Las Vegas and a very young fresh faced 1st officer was at door to say goodbye as we deplaned. On passing I said Whheeee bump wheee bump wheeee bump! and the fresh young face went beetroot red and he muttered 'crosswinds'!The stweardesses face told it all, yeah right, sure etc.I have a distinct feeling that captain had orderd him to stand at door and say goodbye!(lol)On our return flight to UK, it was the same crew and we spent 45 minutes on the ground waiting to taxi and getting to end of runway, and Captain was apoplectic and was not afraid to tell us the passengers just what kind of mood he was getting into!(lol)Last year on Orlando approach we were vectored into Orlando but were landing at Stanford periphery airport, once again the pilot was not slow in telling us what he thought about the ATC as we banked, ducked, and generally danced around the sky at about 5K as we were re-vectored. Pilot eventually said that everyone has to learn, and it was a new ATC traineee, and he understood that, but not on his shift please!!(lol)
March 24, 200422 yr is there any little programs out there that will add a screeching sound on touchdown, that would be pretty cool.
March 24, 200422 yr cantu's 737 has nice screeching sounds on touch down. Hmmm, or is that on crash landings, hehe. It's cool, all the passengers scream. Makes you want to fly right....billg
