This event is associated with Microsoft Windows Security Software Protection service shutdown. The service is designed to shut down when nobody is using it. Perhaps the following link will help - http://www.eventid.net/display-eventid-902-source-Microsoft-Windows-Security-SPP-eventno-10747-phase-1.htm. So you may want to look at your Task Scheduler. The following link applies to 'Source: gupdate' - http://www.eventid.net/display-eventid-0-source-gupdate-eventno-9402-phase-1.htm. Best regards,Jim

Thanks very much for your quick and clear response Jim. I suppose that it's not normal that when SSP shuts down, the running application (in this case FSX) goes in pauze mode and moves to the taskbar. I never experienced this with Windows XP. Can I close down the SSP service or is there a "trick" to prevent SSP sending FSX tot the taskbar?Regards,Don

I did some research and found that you should never shut down the Software Protection service. This could be your problem in that maybe the service has not been turned on. It should be set to 'Automatic' startup. What it does is enforces digital licenses for Windows and Windows applications. If the service is disabled, the OS and licensed applications may run in a notification mode (which I think is happening to you). If you are unfamiliar with opening up the Services program, just click on the Start button in the lower left corner of your desktop and, in the Search bar, type 'services' then lookup up in the Menu and you'll see Services. Click on this to open up the program then scroll down to Software Protection and make sure it is set to an Automatic startup. Another thing to look at is your User Access Control (UAC) setting. You may be having an Administrator controlled problem. Make sure UAC is turned off or disabled. You can turn off UAC by clicking on the startup button, then type User Access, then look up in the Menu and click on change user access control settings. Move the slider all the way down.I've never seen this problem before here on AVSIM and it's a rare occurence as there aren't too many people who get this "problem". If this doesn't fix it, or someone else here on AVSIM can't help you, then I think you probably should do a reinstallation of Windows (ugh!). Before doing that though, you should try restoring your system back to a time before this all started happening.Best regards,Jim

Jim, thanks again for your attention. When I set up my system for FSX, I followed the instructions/advises from NickN on Simforums http://www.simforums.com/forums/topic34141_post198187.html#198187.So I turned of UAC and set SPP services to " manual". I will set it tot automatic. Since one of the advises in the toppic of NickN is to turn off system restore, I can't use this option. What is your professional opinion on the advises of NickN?Regards,Don

NickN is considered the guru for FSX around here. I respect his recommendations but I don't always follow everything he says. He's the developer (or one of them) for GEX. System restore does not always work. I recently had some issues with my system and tried to restore and I could not restore anything. None of the restore points worked so I got rid of all the restore points on my system. I found a solution to my problem via Google and didn't have to reinstall Windows or anything like that. I think that's what NickN is saying. Most problems can be fixed through Google searches as hundreds, if not thousands of other people have encountered the same problem and have asked the same questions (I'm talking about problems with Windows or software/hardware). Google/Bing search engines are awesome. If you want more info on system restore, just go to Google.com and put in the search bar 'can I turn off system restore' and you'll get a lot of recommendations regarding that. In addition, you can put in the whole error message in the search box and it will find a solution to your problem. Event ID 902 or 903 in the search box will give you more info about your problem. When something goes wrong with FSX, most likely a system restore will not fix the problem unless an addon you recently installed caused the problem. The fact you went into your Event Viewer and identified the problem is a big plus. Most people do not know it exists and it's extremely helpful with investigating crashes or other computer anomalies. In regards to your problem, the fact you had SPP services set to manual is probably what caused your problem as it should be set to Automatic. Hopefully that fixed it.Best regards,Jim

Thanks again Jim. I'll try Google for further help. I can always do a fresh system restore including W7. I use the system only for FSX and have - of course - all related software and utils on a separate HD. FSX and the OS are installed on a SSD.Kind regards,Don

Hi Don,So I take it changing the SPP service from Manual to Automatic did not fix your problem? Are you still getting the Event 902 error in the Event Viewer? If it's still not fixed, then maybe Google can find another solution for you before you have to do a fresh system restore. Hopefully you won't have to do that!Best regards,Jim

Jim, I found via google a hint that the Aero functionallity could be the reason for the error. Disabling the Desktop Window Event Manager in the services section should fix the problem. I give that a try and do some flights. Thanks very much for the kind efforts Jim. I let you know what happens.Regards,Don
