March 25, 200422 yr At Discovery Channel I saw a program about airplane accidents, and the case shown was the tragic one of Swiss Air 111, which experienced a fire in the cockpit and crashed near to Halifax, where it was supposed to perform an emergency landing. A scary documentary with a sad ending. A long and detailed investigation of the cause of the accident was made, in order to prevent similar accidents in the future. And eventually the reason was found; an overheated entertainment system combined with flamable materials... One can only ask why such a new system had not been fully tested before use...As I often do flights connected with current or historic events, I wanted to have a look at the location in Flight Simulator and try to see if I could make some reconstruction of the fatal flight...However, I am not able to find Halifax, which should be near to Boston. There are two airports in the city Halifax; Fox Fire (33VA) and Monponsett Pond (MA6). But these are two very small airports, and it does not look like that it does not make sense that the big aiplane should land here, when there are bigger airports nearby. However, still Halifax is relatively near to Boston... Besides of these, there is an airport called Halifax Co (KRZZ) in Roanoke Rapids and an airport called Halifax River (1FD1) in Holly Hill... Especially the last one is too far from Boston to be the one. Or am I wrong?I have been unable to find specific informations about which Halifax airport it was, or which airport in Halifax... Maybe I have been looking the wrong places. Or has the airport been removed by Microsoft for ethical reasons?Does anyone know which airport it was?Kind regards,Nico
March 25, 200422 yr Halifax, Nova Scotia.... It's in Canada--not quite as close to Boston as you'd think :)
March 25, 200422 yr Thank you very much.Yes, of course, it was Halifax in Canada, not in United States...Nico

March 26, 200422 yr "May your takeoffs equal your landings"?? That's a given. Thanks to gravity it can't happen any other way. Or, as it has been said, what goes up must come down.Cheers!Dewey
March 26, 200422 yr Commercial Member Shane, I'm an ex-Haligonia myself...I was there for seven years. It's a great city and a wonderful province ;)One strange fact about this unfortunate accident is Swissair 111 was carrying $300 million in Jewels that were never recovered. I find this staggering considering the painstaking recovery effort that accompanies an accident investigation like this. Lloyds of London wasn't permitted to do their own search out of respect for the victims.DannyCYVR

March 26, 200422 yr I suspect they'd have found them, given the effort made to recover aircraft parts.
