Green horn with some very basic questions

Featured Replies

Thanks to all for the excellent forum.I recently acquired FS2k4, and way back when I was flying FS98 I paid cash dollars for some add in aircraft, laird solution, travel air mystery, geebee etc. Is there a way of getting these units to work correctly in fs2k4? Also, I'm computer literate, but just can't seem to figure out how to install add on scenery. Most instructions say add the scenery file to the folder where you install the add on scenery, but I'm gettin bogged down someplace. Any help appreciated, tks

I really do not think so. You will need to repurchase what you can find or download freeware.Generally the instructions to download are not difficult to understand. Sometimes it can be a bit puzzling but once you get to know the logic it is easy.Roger

Von,Welcome to the forums. The first thing you'll want to do is determine where you want your addon scenery to reside. Some folks choose the ":...Flight Simulator 9Addon Scenery" folder while others choose a folder outside of the FS root directory or even on another disk. Regardless of where you place it, the directions to add scenery to FS are the same. For example, let's say you want to add Mustang Landing.1) Create a folder named Mustang Landing, though you can name it whatever you like within the rules of Windows' naming conventions.2) Ensure that within that folder is at least a subfolder named scenery (containing .bgl files), and if there are corresponding texture files, place them in a subfolder named texture within the Mustang Landing folder as well. If there are no textures, simply leave that folder out.3) If you haven't done so already, move Mustang Landing and its subfolder(s) into the folder you've designated for addon scenery.4) Fire up FS, go to the Opening Screen (if you've selected to bypass it), click on Settings, and open the Scenery Library.5) On the right-hand side, click Add to browse for your addon scenery folder. Once you've browsed to that folder, you should be able to double-click to enter it and should see the folder you want to add (Mustang Landing) along with any other folders you've placed in your addon scenery folder.6) Very Important. Single-click on Mustang Landing to add it to your scenery library, and then select OK. Double-clicking will not select Mustang Landing as desired (where I messed up at first). Then you'll have to restart FS to let it index and display your scenery.I hope this helps you. It's worked for me every time, from airports to navaids to AFCADs. If this doesn't do the trick, keep searching the forums and ask again later. The right person will eventually see your question and be able to help. Stick with it, and before you know it those green horns will turn brown... :-)Happy flying,Kevin

In a good scenery download there should be a READ_ME file. You can open this from the zip and read it. The designer went to the trouble to provide instructions to install it, Follow this and there will be no problems.Joe W.

<<<>>> Possibly, but we've come so far from FS98>FS2000>FS2002>FS2004 that I really wouldn't bother. Put them down to history, as they would likely disappoint you now. There is so much incredible freeware - and payware - available for FS2004 that you could spend your days downloading and never be bored! There is a misconception amongst many that it has to be payware to be any good. This is simply not the case, as much of the freeware stuff available today is better than the payware. Freeware lives on the leading edge of the wave, whereas payware's production cycle takes time. Anyway, there's excellent stuff both ways. Forget those old floppy disks!Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg

I agree with Mark - some of the freeware is fabulous .I just installed the freeware Vancouver BC mesh and it really makes the landscape visually exciting. One other thing I would add to the advice above about installation-this advice was given to me recently and,I have found it to be good advice as far as performance is concerned. That is to ,if possible, locate your add-on scenery on a hard drive or partition other than the one with Windows and FS9.This seems to speed things up quite a bit .Dave
