Deciphering AMDAR?

Featured Replies

Can someone point me to a resource on how to decipher AMDAR weather reports? I gather they're similar to PIREP codes (which I'm too slow to decipher too), but the format looks somewhat different. Also, I'm curious: are these coming from REX or from FSX? I suspect REX, as I don't recall seeing them before I installed REX. Thanks!

AMDAR data is automated reporting via aircraft automated instrumentation; it comes from REX. For a full explanation try this page http://amdar.noaa.gov/FAQ.htmlDJ

Thanks for confirming that it does indeed come from REX. I actually did stumble upon that NOAA page after a Google search, but it still left me puzzled. I did find a somewhat easier-to-understand thread about the data in an old forum post about REX here: http://nzff.org/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t16542.htmlUp til now, I've relied almost exclusively on ATIS broadcasts for weather info, but flying in the bush in Australia, those seem hard to come by. I'd forgotten that one can press shift-Z to get weather info (as well as a frames-per-sec gauge). Is that "cheating", heh? I don't suppose so; a VFR pilot would surely have some idea of local wind speed/direction before taking off.

I use Shift+Z frequently for planning the takeoff runway - even with weather programs FS has it's own ideas about what the wind actually is.... no "cheat" there. Think of it as a digital windsock.DJ
