Resolution and light quality?

Featured Replies

Anyone else noticed that the quality of light displayed on screen is BETTER when FS is used at a lower resolution and with frame rates locked?Last night I accidentally locked my fps to 24 and the resolution to 1024x768x32, lower than my standard settings. I was truly surprised to find that I could definitely see an immprovement in the rendering of ambient light. This in addition to the better looking clouds I was expecting to see.As a further experiment, I then dropped the Global Texture settings to HIGH, from MAXIMUM, added a visibility layer from ground level to 1,500 feet using FSUIPC and then flew repeated take-offs and climb outs at various resolutions and fps settings, but with all other settings the same, and re-setting the flight each time for an exact comparison. Now it's an ephemeral thing, so no point in cropped screenies, but there is, to my eyes, a DEFINITE improvement in the sight picture of FS when the fps is locked lower and there are more system overheads available. I think we've all seen the advantages to cloud display from locking the frame rate but I have never seen the quality of light discussed. The main gains are in the spring and summertime, but the winter diffused light also has a better look to it.It's only a few seconds worth of experiment, but I'd be interested to find out whether others can see this, or whether it's a weird combination of system, sim and user at my end! Which starstorms are you testing with the B = Benchmarking (poorest image quality), the X = (performance quality, middle image quality), or the XQ = (Extreme Quality)? That will make quite a difference in what you see in the sim.Best,sg

I only ever use the `X` drivers as I never benchmark anymore and the XQ settings usually confuse my poor computer! All that excessive mipmapping in FS makes things look like they're crawling across the screen. I keep thinking I'm under attack by ants!:-outtaAllcott
