April 7, 201214 yr I know this is all pure speculation but I am a bit worried about the performance of MS Flight in the near future, when Alaska will be released but also when new options are added (if ever). The thing is: I tried the custom=1 option and enabled some higher FSAA settings (the ones I used with FSX) for my GTX580 (not a slow card) using nVidia Inspector. I was a bit disappointed to see that immediately Flight wasn't totally smooth anymore... And that while I have Scenery density and Shadow quality at High, so not even Maximum... Flying above Hawaii means you almost always have some sea in the vicinity: what if we get Alaska and mountains with trees beyond the horizon? What if (ever) things like AI and ATC are added to the bunch? I always knew that Flight ran smoothly because it is a 'light' game right now but if simply using some higher GPU-settings already makes Flight perform less smooth, I am starting to fear what the future may bring. Now I do NOT post this so all Flight haters can come in and say 'I told you Flight is crap', but I am more interested in experiences of those who also tried higher settings on a (rather) high end PC (I have a i5 2500K @ 4.5, run Windows 7 64 bit, have 8 Gb of RAM and, as said, a GTX580). Maybe I simply used the wrong settings in Inspector, although I only changed the FSAA. As it is now I am back to custom=0.
April 7, 201214 yr Just did some testing on my setup - changed the custom settings to 1, and then set up Nvidia Inspector for Flight much like I have it setup for FSX. First I had it setup to use the external fps limiter at 30 fps. Started a free flight from Hilo, and flew mainly over the populated area there around the airport. While my framerates stayed pegged on 30 fps, never dropping below, I now had significant micro stuttering that I have previously not had. Went back out and turned the external fps limiter off, and tried again. This time, the micro stuttering went away. My framerates pretty much stayed between 40-45 fps over the populated area. Don't know that I saw any appreciable difference in the graphics quality though. Again this was with settings very close to what I use for FSX, which are conservative, ie AA at 8Xs Combined, AF at 16x. Texture quality set to high quality. My in game graphics were set very high, only one I have knocked down a notch is scenery density - it is at high rather than max. Don B
