Saitek X52 (not pro) latest driver version and other issues...

Featured Replies

Hey all, first post here, enjoying all of the info on the forum, looks like I have some reading to do!

I picked up a Saitek X52 stick and throttle (not pro) at my local thrift store for a mere $18 a few days ago . It is in great shape (looks like new and in the box) although I have some concerns and was hoping some fellow X52 users could chime in.

So,

Naturally I headed straight to the Saitek website for the latest drivers (I have Windows 7 64bit by the way).

After installing the drivers and programming software I see that I have driver version 6.0.4.1. Windows 7 update then alerted me to the fact that a newer driver was available, 6.2.2.4 I believe.

Question 1: If there is in fact a newer driver available, why don't I see it on the Saitek website? Is this a generic Microsoft driver that Windows is offering me? I've been cruising the forums for info on this and it seems that many of the X52 owners are using this newer version. What am I missing, do Saitek provide this driver directly?

On my quest for info, I've also seen many people complaining of issues with the SST software, various crashes, instability etc etc. The stick and throttle seem to be fully working and I have tested each button/axis, all seems to be working well. That being said, the profiler software won't even launch, I get a long winded error window on launch.

Question 2: It seems like MANY people have issues with the Saitek software. Would I be missing anything crucial if I were to uninstall it? Can I avoid it altogether and use alternatives? (I'm not so much interested in what those alternatives are just yet, I simply want to know if its worth putting more time into solving the issue, I've already wasted a few hours on it!)

I'm wondering if the above 2 issues are in some way connected?

and finally...

Question 3: In the settings window I see I have control over the brightness of the MFD and button LEDs. When I adjust the sliders, the LED levels do not smoothly increase/decrease in brightness, rather have only three levels of brightness, OFF, DIM and FULL brightness, seems a little clunky. Is this the same for everyone or might I have an issue with the hardware/software?

Anyway, I'll leave it at that, sorry to be so long winded. At the end of the day, I was lucky to pick this up for $20 and I'd love to get it set up! I don't even have a flight sim as of yet, I still have to decide which route to take!

Thanks for reading!

Hi caffeinegum,

I don't really know the answers, but did you join the Saitek Forum or just go there and look at what's visible. Until you join, you only get to see about 1/10th of what's available (announcements and common fixes as I recall). Once you sign up, you get access to several more forums and a lot more information. Chances are you can find the information on the driver in there somewhere.

Best regards,

Thanks for the reply Bob!

Unfortunately it seems Saitek have closed registrations to their forum because of spam bots, so I could only trawl the two available threads.

Even more frustrating, some of the visible threads had promising links to other threads which I can't view without registering.

Just a quick follow up screenshot, this is my driver/software versions (running Windows 7 SP1 x64) and the error I get when attempting to launch the profile editor...

Anyone have any insight into the error?

Curious of what combo of drivers/software other X52 users have installed (and working correctly)

I have emailed Saitek support, I really wish they would at least make the forum view-able to un-registered users, I feel that there could be some answers in there somewhere. Does anyone have access to the forums, I'd be extremely grateful if they could do a quick search there for me.

Hi caffeinegum,

WRT the signup, there's not much you can. Sometimes they only block free providers like GMail et al, but I had a look and I can't even find a "Join" button. I'd take the software they're offering you (I think that last line is a link) and try it. Set a manual System Restore point first. If anything goes wrong, uninstall it and then go back to the manual restore point.

As far as what you'd lose, probably the ability to send characters with the buttons and axes. I guress there's a bit more to it, but those would be the main things. If you can live without them, and you really can with FS and the like, then you could try just not using it. FS has lots of programming functions built-in, FSX has 1140 button/axis commands I think. You'd need to pick up FSUIPC (or learn to edit XML files) to get to them all, FS only shows about 450 of them, but other than that you wouldn't really miss much. A lot of other sims don't have that much capability though.

As far as the revision number goes, I wouldn't worry about it. You had to specify the stick model and OS at download, it may be that they just didn't update it for all the models, unsupported functions and things like that can create problems for updates. I'd think the site would have the latest verions on it.

Good luck!

Best regards,

Thanks again Bob for your insight. I'll probably end up doing just what you suggested.

Couldn't resist tinkering around this evening though to try and work out why the profile editor wouldn't run. I'm in touch with Mad Catz support anyway, and going by my screen shot the guy immediately said it looked like a .NET issue.

With that in mind I removed all aspects of .NET from my Windows installation, deep cleaned the whole lot and re-installed all versions one by one. Still, profile editor refuses to launch.

*for anyone remotely interested in the removal of .NET I used the tools/info in the links below*

Anyway, I'll be sure to head back to this thread if I find a solution and I'll document a fix/workaround in case anybody else runs into the same issue.

Fingers crossed!

BINGO!

Managed to solve the crashing problem after some trial and error!

The issue was that I had deleted the folder C:\Users\Public\Documents\ which contains a folder called Saitek SD6 Profiles which has a single file in it called ViewStatus.

Obviously this file is crucial to the function of the software, I restored the folder/file and bam, back in buisness.

That will teach me for deleting things I shouldn't! Case closed. :hi:
