Boy did I make a mess... (new ATI CCC and drivers)

Featured Replies

I downloaded the newest drivers and Catalyst from the ATI/AMD site yesterday morning and, as i was in a hurry on my way out, I installed the new CCC without... uninstalling the old one!!! Yes I know stupid, stupid, stupid!

As you can guess, all I got was a black screen when I restarted my PC, having gone into safe mode I could roll back to the previous Windows XP situation but without the old ATI CCC. Now I cannot uninstall the remaining ATI files (I get an error message each time I try), neither can I install the old or new ones. I left an SOS ticket at ATI support but as it is Saturday, I won't get any assistance before a few days. Has anyone encountered this silly situation and found a solution for it?

Thank you and enjoy a great week-end (bad start in my case...)

With one of the beta releases I had to use 'Windows Installer Clean Up Utility' (Google it) to remove all traces of the driver as the uninstaller did not work correctly, resulting in a black screen. I needed to pick through and remove all reference to CCC and ATI display drivers - but make sure you don't touch anything else. I also combined it with CCleaner and Driver Sweeper to rid me of all traces of the previous set, but obviously care is needed.

You could also try re-running the driver package in safe mode and run the uninstaller again, perhaps using custom mode making sure everything that can be ticked for removal is ticked.

I have installed new drivers over old many times with no issues however... I'm lazy sometimes and perhaps have been lucky up till now.

Do the above at you own risk.

Thank you Mark, will do as advised, don't worry I will not hold you responsible for my foolishness in the first place! First thing to remember is "don't rush it" when doing updates, in particular graphic drivers...
