737 Pilot in command question

Featured Replies

I am a bit of a newbie with this so feel free to tell me if this is in completely the wrong place.

I have got into FSX recently and i am having a really great time flying the 737-800 included with the sim. However i have been looking at the 737 Pilot in command add on that is available and i really like some of the features that comes with, (callouts, liveries, different versions etc)

I do have one question regarding the autopilot. I have just about got my head around the autopilot in the default 737, I can follow ATC instructions set up for and land using ils. However i noticed on the pilot in command pages it mentions it has "Full flight management system" now while i can see myself learning to use this in the future can i for now fly the plane like i mentioned above? will i recognise the autopilot from the one i have flown before and will it fly just like i am used to if i dont want to use the management system.

Sorry if this is a bit rambling.

Thanks in advance.

Simple answer - yes. Just enter the Nav1 data and your aircraft should capture the glideslope just like in real life. But you really should learn how to use the FMC.

Best regards,

Jim

Forgot to add you'll also have to enter Nav data for each waypoint in order to get to your destination. You won't be able to use the flight plan as it is done with the default 737.

Wow thanks for the fast response.

I fully intend to learn the FMC but i didn't want to spend money on it if i can't at least have fun with before i jump in with the more complicated stuff.

On a related note are there any good FMC tutorials floating around?

In case of the Wilco, you are lucky. They've included a step through guide by Mike Ray on the basic setup. Means that not only text guides you but also 'the Captain himself'. Catch a glimpse while looking at the review here. http://www.avsim.com.../Wilco/737.html Keep in mind that the included docs offer the first steps to get her in the air with FMC guidance, but it's not like you're getting to know every detail. But the net also offers detailed FMC guides of course, so that may not be the main selling point.

As you've mentioned the default 737, which is a -800, those models would come with the iFly NG or the PMDG NGX. The Wilco models the older Classic 737 (-300 to -500), being partially 'glass' and analogue on the rest. So if you are looking for the latest 737 variant, those two may be worth a look.

There's no lack of 'which one is better' threads on Avsim so far. ^_^

Totally agree with CoolP. Make Ray has the best manuals and tutorials and especially on the FMC.

Best regards,

Jim

True that is. Me says everybody stumbled upon Mike's manuals at the start of airliner flying. I just saw that YT offers a ton of video tutorials too. Some are generic, quite some are 737-800 and the first results also had some Wilco specific ones. So there's enough to plan an evening. I've just used '737 fmc' as search item.
