May 8, 201214 yr Okay, I know this is kinda late, but I live in Houston and this is kinda important to me. I know many of you live elsewhere, but have a read. Southwest Airlines wants to "free" Hobby airport, one of the 3 major airports in the Houston area, to make it international. Yes, there is currently George Bush Intercontinental, but this airport is the main hub for United Airlines, so it doesn't "fit" for Southwest to depart from there, since they have been operating domestic flights out of Hobby for more than 30 years. According to the Houston Airport System and Southwest, to equip Hobby for international flights, it would require a new international terminal and a United States Border Facility, all costing around $100 million dollars, which Southwest is willing to pay for the upgrade. Again, THEY want to pay for the upgrade. Obviously, United Airlines was ######, so they complain that "there is a perfectly good airport there for Southwest to use, there is no need for this upgrade". Also, they remark that it would decrease jobs in the Houston area (I'm not sure how...), and it would make a "unfair" competition, even though SWA says they would have competitive prices. My thoughts on this: The City of Houston needs to approve this ASAP... Not only the more jobs thing, but it really doesn't hurt United at all... They're up north, in IAH, while SWA wants to operate out of HOU, down south. They whole "There is a perfectly good airport here" thing is a dumb, because then why are there more than 10 general aviation + executive + smaller airports in Houston?
