May 10, 200422 yr GuysI have FS Meteo and I've noted that each time it updates there are two distinct stutters, about 2 seconds in length each that completely freezes the video display but the flight simulation continues in the processor. As a result when the video un-freezes, there is a sudden jump and you find yourself not at all where you intended to be. In a lot of cases, it occurs about four feet off the ground during the landing flare. The first of the two occurs when the refreshed download occurs. The second occurs when the weather 'activates'.I have a broadband connection that d/l 2Mbps. The provider is offering 3 Mbps. Would a faster download aid this stutter or am I facing a limitation of FS and/or FS Meteo?Second question...for users of ActiveSky...Do you experience this stutter???BobL
May 12, 200422 yr I have this stutter too and have lived with it as a necessary cost for getting the beautiful weather effects that FSMeteo provides.I believe that your processor speed will be the determinant of how disruptive this is.I have just upgraded to a 3.2 Ghz 800 FSB Pentium (non-Prescott) and even with this, there is still a stutter (albeit less noticeable than I used to get with a 2.53 Ghz 500 FSB Pentium)However, I have also discovered that Hyperthreading appears to be a significant help if you have access to it. Search the Hardware forum for more information. I set the affinity of FS Meteo to processor 0 and FS9 to processor 1. When the FSMeteo update and activation occur, I don't get a stutter although sometimes I get a brief blink on the display. The FSMeteo update crawl at the top of the screen does jerk somewhat but I often turn it off anyway....My impression is that I run smoother (my main desire) with H-T set up as above but still get stutters sometimes when using frame-rate hungry planes with lots of clouds. Also, you might contact FS-GS (simmarket.com). They run a service that claims to help you adjust your hardware and FS settings to achieve smoother performance and I would assume this would help with FSMeteo too. I haven't tried them (yet). There are very positive testimonials on the forums but also vociferous skeptics.
May 13, 200422 yr Hi SteveThanks for the reply. I've tried setting the affinity to no avail.I run FS on twin 2.8 zeons mounted on a server M/B; XP pro. I set FS to processor 0 and 1 and all the other stuff like FS meteo to 2 and 3. I don't recall what the FSB of this rig was when I built it ...I don't keep those type numbers in my head. I think I've got enough processor power behind it. I just didn't know if a faster download speed would help. The extra 1Mbps being offered is $20/month US more than the 2 Mbps. FS Meteo and the add-ons from the library are the only thing that I download so I was wondering if it would be worth it or if Active Sky found a way to beat the stutter.BobL
May 13, 200422 yr I do not have stutters.Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Supporthttp://www.hifisim.com/images/as2004proudsupporter.jpg
May 27, 200422 yr I also have this stutter, even after doing the excellent FS-GS tweaking. I run a DELL P4, 2.53Ghz, 1024 Rambus Ram, Ti-4600, with two larg'ish monitors and a 3Mb/sec cable modem (Motorola SurfBoard--great). I've figured the FSMeteo stutter is "natural" and cannot be eliminated unless I spend another $3K on the latest and greatest you know what ! It's an irritant especially if it refreshes when at 100' AGL before landing.I thought about getting ActiveSky instead and was actually going to post for opinions on that.JS Jonathan Sacks Dell XPS Gen 4, Pentium IV Northwood extreme 3.8Ghz, 3Ghz RAM, eVGA 7900 GTO, 12 GoFlight modules plus MCP-PRO AP and EFIS, GF pedestal, CH rudder pedals, CH throttle quadrant, 42" LG LED, 24" DELL LCD, Windows XP, FS2004, FSUIPC 3.96 FS Autostart 1.1 (Build 11), FS Navigator 4.6, UT, FE, GE, REX, PMDG, Level-D, PSS, etc.
May 27, 200422 yr In the Modules folder is the FSUIPC Configuration Settings document. There is this line "WeatherReadInterval=". Change the value to 32 or even 64.Hope this helps,Greg
