May 11, 200422 yr Hi,I have recently purchased and installed an impressive scenery area. The installation was not as smooth as I would have liked and left me with a few nagging questions. So, I reinstalled to a temporary folder to observe all the file placements before moving the install elements into the sim.My question concerns the placement of 4x .bgl files. These all appear to be landclass files and have appeared in the Flight Simulator 9SceneryBASE folder. Now, my understanding is that to be active landclass addons should be assigned a relatively low priority. In my scenery.cfg I have a folder called "Landclass Addons", where I place any landclass files from 3rd party sources, and this is Area.003 (Layer=3) under Default Scenery (Area.002, Layer=2). I think I can understand the logic here in that Area.002 has Local=SceneryBASE and so any landclass files in BASE presumably would take precedent over others below. The SceneryBASE folder has one sub-folder - "scenery" containing 9 files from the FS9 default install. Some of these appear to be landclass files as well, viz. lclookup.bgl, worldlc.bgl and worldwc.bgl.Should the 4x .bgl files from my newly purchased scenery area be moved to the SceneryBASEscenery folder OR is it okay for them to be left in the SceneryBASE folder and, if so, will they be recognized? I am assuming the authors knew what they were doing so have not attempted to move these files as yet.As always, thanks in anticipation :)Mike
May 11, 200422 yr It will not hurt anything to move them to the BASEScenery folder in any case. If you open the scenery.cfg file, you will note:[Area.002]Title=Default SceneryLocal=SceneryBASELayer=2Active=TRUERequired=TRUERemote=points to the SceneryBASE folder. The system then looks in a SceneryBASEScenery folder and (if present) Texture folder for the actual files and bitmaps, respectively. Having the *.bgl(s) just in the SceneryBASE folder may not register them.W. Sieffert Bill Sieffert
May 11, 200422 yr Author "Having the *.bgl(s) just in the SceneryBASE folder may notregister them"....yes, that's what I thought might be the case. Can you think of a simple way to verify that this is indeed so? I'm not sure what areas these landclass files cover as they were included as part of an expansion pack. The original scenery and expansion pack both contain a multitude of photorealistic terrain textures. Is it likely the landclass files will be placing these textures? Sounds a bit odd for if that's true then again I am assuming that this would imply a generic element to these textures. There's a hell of a lot of them - 3,661 objects, including autogen, in the original texture folder and 4,081 objects (no autogen files) in the other.Mike
May 12, 200422 yr Author "Can you think of a simple way to verify that this is indeed so?"..........I suppose I have now answered my own question. I moved those landclass files to the BASEscenery folder and the sim updated at the next load.I selected one of my prepared flight situations, took to the air and soon my jaw was dropping in amazement! This has to be one of the most spectacular scenery areas ever and there is loads to explore. With scenery and autogen sliders both at dense the effect is extraordinary with rich detail everywhere you look. There are several remarkably complex and carefully crafted real world airports thrown into the mix and the supplied AFCAD files ensure an interesting level of ongoing activity. Despite all this it manages to be remarkably frame rate friendly.Perhaps one or two of you are becoming just a little bit curious as to the identity of the scenery in question?.....'WONDERFUL RIO' + the 'EXPANSION PACK' and worth every penny of their purchase price IMHO! What's more, if you buy both at the same time - I didn't - there are significant savings to be made.http://www.worldsceneries.com/Shame my experience with the installer left much to be desired, but it does serve to emphasize just how important it is for the user to keep control of what is going on.Mike
