May 15, 200422 yr This may not be the correct place to post this. Sorry if this is the case. Thing is I use a small network for my flight simming and one of the client machines recently departed this life. I've just replaced it with a new 'putes running Win XP Home - its predecessor's OS was Win 98 SE. I expected things to improve as all 3 machines now run XP. I connected my new machine to the workgroup, fired up the system and all appeared fine. On this client, I run a moving map, Radar Contact/Adv.Disp and FSFlightMax.All was not fine. Wide FS works OK as does RC and my map. Probs started with FSMax - it was not able to 'see' the FS prog on the main machine. Looked a bit more closely and found that whilst the client is able to take files from the main machine, I cannot access the new client from the main. When I try I'm asked to enter a password, then told I'm not allowed access. Seems to be some sort of security issue. I don't have any passwords on my system. I've spent hours poring over the M/soft support sites and searches on this Forum and can't get any answers. I'm at a complete loss - does anyone know if there is a means of turning off the security measures in XP. Any other ideas would be useful - stop me tearing my hair out anyway.Bud
May 15, 200422 yr Make sure there is a user/password on the XP Home machien that matches the user/password that is currently logged in on the main machine. I assume your main machine is running Windows 98...you must have a matching user/password or you won't be able to access it nor will it allow you to login as another user (Windows 98 deficiency).
May 16, 200422 yr DO you run a firewall? If so make sure that all of the firewall settings on the client allow the main to access it. This may not be your problem but I have run into this in the past and this is the solution that worked for me. Good luck!Philip Olsonhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/supporter.jpg
May 16, 200422 yr Ken and PhilipThanks for the responses. The main machine actually had XP Home as the OS and there are no passwords logged on anywhere. The system ran much better when I had a mixture of OSs. Silly me to think all machines with XP would be an improvement. This isn't a firewall issue - I'm coming round to the conclusion that in some way the replacement machine was installed as a server when the OS was set up.Suppose I could start again and set up a new network - bit nervous about that tho' in case it didn't work and I end up losing the functionality I now have. Bit wimpish I know but my experiences of networks have not been all that positive.Bud
May 17, 200422 yr I would suggest you try using a password. WindowsXP is more security aware. Some shares/apps won't run from a remote PC unless you login with a password. It's worth a try. Username/password combination needs to be the same on all XP machines within the workgroup.
May 17, 200422 yr Thanks again guys - I'm really grateful for the time taken to provide advice. I'll keep plugging away with the suggestions.Bud
