"Fly Tampa" scenery question (by idiot scenery person)

Featured Replies

I just installed UT and it works beautifully. Everything works as advertised and I love it. However, I am now discovering that in order to modify/update/change anything relating to AI, you need a considerable amount of knowledge and experience with AFCADS and other stuff. The UT manual is almost incomprehensible. I know nothing about that AI and the forums at PAI look plain scary to me. I've already spent 7 years adding on a/c and panels; ain't no way I'm gonna start spending serious time fixing scenery now as well.My question is this: if I want to instal any additional 3rd pty scenery by Fly Tampa, for example, will it require "fixing" AI AFCADS for any newly installed scenery areas and will it risk screwing up UT for me in the process? Are any add-on scenery areas automated in regard to fixing AFCADS?Appreciate any advice or guidance, thanks!JS

I believe all flytampa sceneries have a afcad for that particular airport installed automatically when you install the scenery. If it doesn't there is nothing to it really, you just download an afcad from avsim for example and place it in the add-on scenery folder and it will then be installed...easy. :)

Yes, most addon sceneries now come with an afcad included, and I know for sure that the ones by Flytampa does.AFCAD2 files are easy to install, you just put the file into any scenery directory that has been activated through the scenery library. For addon sceneries i prefer to put it in the scenery folder of the respective sceney, for default airports the addon scenery/scenery folder is probably best.- Oyvind

Hi JS,Have not seen you post for some time, glad to see you here again. On your question, yes all of the FlyTampa sceneries have a AFCAD2 file with them, and as other have said, just go into their scenery folder and move it to the FS9/Addon Scenery/scenery folder, which is where all the FS9 AFCAD files are located, including UT's.Now the problem. Most authors use the AF2XXX.bgl titles for their AFCAD2 files. Ultimate Traffic use F1UTXXXX titles for their AFCAD files. You have to make sure that you don't have duplicates. When I install addon sceneries I also double check the installed UT AFCAD files to make sure they are gone if I have a new AFCAD2 file for that scenery. Really wish that their was a common naming convention so that this problem would not occur.Cheers JS and good flyingBob KDEN

Bob:Thanks for your post and for your welcome (!)I bought DUBAI from Fly Tampa today and the instal was fully automated and flawless. It works sensationally and I never imagined such a crowded apron with dozens of big a/c of all liveries. It is stunning and I am thrilled. However, at this time, I don't know if there is still a UT AFCAD for Dubai. I know that duplicate AFCADs have led to CTD issues for some people. But so far,....so good!I still don't really get the editing and/or renaming of AFCADs. If I want to put in the PAI AI AFCAD for the default FS9 Heathrow--because at present the a/c are not lined up at the gates nicely--do I stick it into the Addon Scenery/Scenery folder with all of the other UT bgls (of which there are 1,477)? And if so, do I just dump it in with the current zipped PAI AI AFCAD name? I am still unclear about the procedure for this. I appreciate any further clarification.(Well, sigh!, I guess I am already on the way to becoming an FS9 Scenery editor....!)Thanks to flightjunkie as well.JS

Let me see if I understand you correctly. You have a UT afcad file for heathrow installed, and you want to use the PAI afcad for heathrow instead? If so, then it's simple. Simply copy the PAI afcad, not the zip file but the bgl file which is inside the zip file, to the addon scenery/scenery folder and delete the UT afcad for heathrow. It will install itself automatically when you start fs9 the next time.

Paragon:Yeah, that is correct. Thanks for your post. I did just that yesterday and it made no diff. I'd hoped and expected to see the traffic line up at the gates nice and neatly at EGLL, but no such luck. The UT traffic was spread out some way from any jetways. I just don't get it....Thanks again!JS

How far from the jetway are we talking about? You probably shouldn't expect them to line up perfectly is and every time. It's just not possible yet in fs9. Perhaps if you could show a screenshot I could see how much it is? You might also have duplicate afcads, that could make your traffic park in a weird way, or the afcad you downloaded is not very good.If you are interested in a really nice EGLL, I suggest you look at Heathrow2000 Pro, they have a demo and you can download the correct afcad with it so you can see if it lines up then.

It's not miles off--about 50 to 150 feet or so. It doesn't look too bad. I could live with it. For some reason I just assumed that UT had engineered things so that all a/c would line up everywhere neatly against the jetways. But that ain't the case. I am not blaming them; their product is stupendous. All I am trying to do is fine-tune things if possible without spending 678 hours doing it. I may just leave things as they are 'cos I really don't think I have the time, knowledge or inclination to figure out parking radiuses and all the myriad factors one needs to have at one's fingertips. I thought there might be a quick fix but it looks as if that is not the case.I bought Fly Tampa DUBAI and MIAMI this weekend and that stuff rocks. The alignments are formidable and remarkable. That's real icing on the cake for me. Perhaps I should just be satisfied and not mess with things if they basically work well. Thanks for posting.JS

You could try and adjust the gates yourself. It's not really that hard. You download the program afcad and then open the correct afcad file for heathrow. You can then easily move the gates left, right, front or back from the jetway. You don't need to know about parking radiuses or anything else.Let me just get this clear. Did you download an afcad for heathrow from avsim, I'm assuming it's the default one, and place it in the right folder?-Mikkel

Mikkel:I d/l one of the "official" AFCADs for EGLL at PAI AI AFCAD using their Search function. I thought it would be a cinch to drop it into the Scenery folder and then see the a/c line up right at EGLL --but no such luck.Anyway, thanks for your post. (I don't know how to open an AFCAD. Y'see, the problem for me with all this stuff is....I just dunno what the heck I'm doing; and while I've done years of a/c and panel d/l and tweaks, I cannot really start dealing with scenery/airport tweaks now. I need to FLY or I'll be tweaking forever!)JS

Hi JS,I use Gary Simmons EGLL scenery which is really good. In his package is a very accurate AFCAD2 file for Heathrow. Gary's work is on the same level as Fly Tampa. It is a "little" frame rate unfriendly, but I can manage it pretty well with my P4-1.7ghz system, plus you will get perfect parking at all the gates. Let me know if you looked at his scenery here: http://www.uk2000scenery.com/heathrowpro/I have gotten pretty critical of scenery since there ae so many good ones out there now. This one is really good, almost as good as my "homeboy" Denver International Airport. Sometime check it out here on AVSIM, it is by Harald KrauseCheersBob
